COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Deep amber brown with a dense off-white head, Dunkelweiss 30° rediscovers Hefeweiss beers through a Belgian brewer’s lens. Envisioned by our own Matty “Smooth” Gilliland, this beer opens with sweet clove and banana notes that give way to a chocolaty warm finish with a peppery tingle across the palate. “I thought it would be fun to make a German wheat beer; we’ve explored the Belgian wheats pretty thoroughly,” said Gilliland. “Since this is Lips of Faith – and part of what makes that program fun is to make beers that are really unique and different – making a big, strong, dark Weiss beer sounded pretty folly-licious. It’ll still showcase all of the flavors that a Hefeweiss beer would have, but add in the burly body and extra punch. Think of it as a Grand Cru dunkelweiss.”

Poured black browned with fluffy tan head. Tastes of roasted nuts and wheat. Nice malty character with the perfect amount of hops will buy again.

Brown with a healthy, lasting ran head. Aroma is caramelized/candied banana. Flavor is more complex and features clove, apple pumpkin spice bread, banana, and a complexity we couldn’t put our finger on, but was attributed to pepper by a companion. I don’t actually see pepper listed in the description though. Either way, this is a masterfully brewed beer, by far the best in the style that I’ve had. A delightfully chewy flavor that only gets better in the aftertaste.

Bottle. Pours a dark amber with a small head. Not a lot to this - very malty, but not much else to it. Meh.

In short: A cranked-up imperialised version of a classic dunkelweisen (ripe bananas, cloves, etc;). Good beer
How: Bottle 22oz. Consume a few months after purchase. Bottle forwarded to me by oakbluff, thanks a lot Scott
The look: Clear dark ruby topped by a persistent small beige head
In long: Aroma is typical for the style with plenty of ripe bananas, medium amount of cloves, etc. Tate is again what you expect from the style. Ripe bananas, browned banana peels, cloves, lots of toasted wheat, dry green cooking herbs, inherent spiciness. Of course being a 9% brew this is not your typical thirst German dunkelweisen, however the alcohol was very well hidden and the sweetness was really not overwhelming. Not a great beer but certainly better than I thought a cranked up 9% American Dunkelweizen would be. Not only did I enjoyed this beer but they say that drinking a full bomber of strong beer every day is a healthy habit (they = people like me who drink a bomber of strong beer everyday).

Bottle from a BA trader - thanks! Dark brown pour with a huge off-white head. Aroma has a large clove and banana presence but there is also chocolate, light spice and pepper, and some raisin with sweet malt. Taste is clove with light spice and a slightly off or perhaps artificial chocolate flavor followed by sweet malt and some trailing whispers of alcohol. Smooth and coasting mouthfeel. The chocolate is a bit jarring but otherwise I liked the beer.

Had this one in the bottle and on tap, the rate is from Dexters. Deep opaque brown-black with a massive, creamy beige/off-white head. Pronounced sweet banana aroma. Big, luscious malt body. Creamy on the palate. A touch watery at times, I think the bottle was more lively. An interesting German-Belgian mix up, definitely leaning toward the German side. Quite a nice beer either way, but the bottle was superior.

Found this bottle for $5 in a little shop in Fort Collins. Awesome! Poured a dark brown with a frothy khaki head. Big banana smell, with other hints of clove, wheat, and spices. Taste follows suit, with big banana, some cocoa, wheat, and spices. Reminds me of a big glass of sweet liquid banana bread. Good lacing, a creamy mouthfeel, and medium carbonation. Overall, powerful smells and flavors, but still very well-balanced. Delicious.

Serving: 22 oz. bottle from State Line Liquors. It pours a very dark brown with tons of red highlights and a large, light tan head. The nose is powerful with notes of banana, a boatload of clove, and wheat. The flavor had a significant amount of fruitiness including the banana from the nose and the clove almost becomes overpowering. A good bit of sweetness and only a slight bitterness on the back end. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Interesting, but just not my style.

Bomber from Whole Foods Market North Raleigh. Pours a while ago and I can still smell strong banana coming from the glass two feet away. Pours a clear dark brown color with a medium sized creamy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of banana, banana bread, caramel, soy. The taste is sweet bready malts, banana, pineapple, caramel and a mildly hoppy finish. Something almost smoky in there as well. Medium bodied. Enjoyable.

A - Pours a dark black-ruby color with a finger of frothy khaki colored head. He head fades down fairly slowly leaving behind some nice lacing. S - Aroma is full of banana and clove with pepper with a bit of wheat and sweet malt. T - Starts off with some clove and banana flavor with some wheat. Through the middle some sweet malt and some more yeast flavor with some more clove. The finish is a mix of banana, clove, some bubblegum, some rich sweet malts, and a touch of booze. M - Medium-plus bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth with a spicy and lightly sweet and warming finish. D - Very drinkable. Nice take on an stronger version of a dunkelweizen. The balance is nice with some really good strong banana and clove notes.
