COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Eric’s Ale, named for long time New Belgium brewer Eric Salazar, combines a dry, sour beer aged up to three years in oak foeders with a semi sweet, higher alcohol base beer. The resulting blend is re-fermented with peach juice, creating a smooth ale with subtle peach tones and a warm, spicy finish. The aroma has pleasant hints of vanilla and tropical fruit, the wood characteristics are present but nicely muted.

Had from bottle from Hi Time Wines. Was recommended, and a sour, so I couldn’t pass it up. Pours a beautiful orange / gold color with a slight head and good lacing. The aroma is amazing. Citrus, peach, orange, apples, with a wonderful undertone of oak, wood, and funk. When I read the description on the bottle to my friend, he was immediately turned off. He doesn’t like sours, he also isn’t the biggest fan of oak, however, he agreed that it all came together really nicely. Even I’m not the biggest fan of fruity beers, but Eric was definitely able to pull this one off. The bottle says that it’s a sour beer for people that don’t like sour beers. A fruit beer for people who don’t like fruit beers. And I agree. The flavors are amazingly complex with a mild sourness, woody oak tones, and great carbonation. We both remarked that it was a bit like a white wine, but more complex. A wonderful sour beer with a unique quality that really sets it apart.

Bottle. Orange pour with a white head. Apple and peach on the nose. Sour taste, with plenty of peach. This is an excellent sour.

Clean deep golden color, low white small bubbly head. Aroma has a strong floral presence, some grainy and apple tartness, sour not is fruity with a light horse blanket mustiness. Flavor has a strong, tart sour presence up front, smooth sweet apple and green grape middle with a mild horse blanket musty presence at the end. Lots of carbonation, modest body and a smooth texture. Overall a solid, well balanced beer with some modest sour notes.

Nice crisp clear peach and apricot coloured body with hardly any head at all and not much movement. Aroma of pungent sour apples, pears, apricots, yeast, hay and the easily undisputed gueuze smell - amazing and mouth watering. Medium-bodied; Nice sour and tart apple and peach flavour with a very odd meaty, full-bodied; malty flavour that has a lot of depth. Aftertaste shows the full-bodied syrupy and dense fruity flavour. Overall, not a bad choice for beer #3300, but has a bit of an odd full-bodied, syrupy flavour right after the initial taste that takes it away from a sour ale or a gueuze like flavour. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from City Beer in San Francisco, California on 29-June-2010 for US$8.99 sampled at home in Washington on 29-Novemeber-2011.

Pour is a light hazy orange with a nice distinct lasting lace. Aroma wow! smell like sour patch kids after being sucked on for as second mixed with sugary wheaty cereal. Taste Yes! A little candied sugar upfront quickly followed by dry mouth puckering lemon hay sour. Then it finishes with dry and crisp like a great brutt champagne. AWESOME!

On tap at Beachwood SourFest 2011. Pours a hazy orange with some white head. Aroma is sweet with some peach coming out and mild sour notes. Taste is more sweet than sour but fairly well balanced. Peaches are distinct all the way through the taste but does seem artificial to some degree or at least more sweet than a peach usually is. Mouth feel is a little weak with nothing really happening there like I get from a lot of NB beers. Overall it was interesting and something that I would like to try from the bottle to pick up the difference but not something I’ll seek out aggressively.
