3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Deep dark brown coloured body with a very thin, fast-dying tan head. Aroma of bunches of peat, coffee, chocolate, oak, raisins and even some vanilla noticeable. Medium-bodied; Deep strong peat and coffee flavours dominate with only a hint of chocolate and oak noticeable, but a lot of alcohol and deep bitter notes. Aftertaste is very strong with the coffee, peat, roasted malt and a lot of chocolate and alcohol. Overall, a strong and relatively good beer - showing perhaps a bit too much coffee, not enough chocolate and a little too much alcohol and peat. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Arrowine in Arlington, Virginia on 24-November-2012 for US$6.99 sampled at home in Washington on 28-April-2013.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Heavy coffee and dark chocolate flavor. I love the espresso flavor. A dark brew with a brown and creamy head. Had on tap at the hay merchant. This will be one of my favorite beers. The only complaint I have is that it has a high alcohol content that is heavy on the aftertaste.

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 11/20
A nose of coffee, chocolate, and dark roasted malt. Pours a jet black with a mostly diminishing khaki head and spotty lacing. The taste is wonderfully bitter. Robust. Strong black coffee, dark roasted malt, with hints of chocolate. Full body with medium carbonation. Overall, an excellent porter!

3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 13/20
Strong coffee, roasted unmalted barley, and zwieback nose. Black, medium firm tan head with good retention and lacing.Smooth, full body. Pronounced coffee flavor, a vegetal note is present at midpalate. Espresso finish. If New Belgium beers kept a little better, this beer could be spectacular.

3.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Black with a thin brown head. Aroma is strong coffee with a little bit of chocolate. Similar to a mocha with a double shot of espresso. Flavor is big coffee with a hint of chocolate. Could be quite excellent, but the finish is overly bitter which detracts from it overall. Still, definitely nice if you like a strong coffee beer.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours thick and dark with a thin tan head. The nose is heavy coffee, like a fresh poured cup of joe that someone snuck chunks of milk chocolate into. Hints of spice and cherries mingle intermittently. The taste is high sweet and medium bitter. The texture is to crisp. Overcarbonated. The body is heavy an the finish is long.

4.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Bottle. Big and black, still, but still giving up a big head. The aroma reminds me of baking brownies ... thick with chocolate and roast. This is a delicious drinker, and would go GREAT with vanilla ice cream or just about any chocolate dessert. Brilliant. (#4973, 4/7/2013)

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Rated 3/24/13. Portion of a 22 oz bottle poured into a Hunahpu’s snifter. From notes.
A: Pours a dark brown color that’s seemingly kind of light for the style. The head is a one finger light mocha shade.
S: Some roasted barley influence appears on the nose, backed by light coffee and chocolate. I swear I pick up a bit of oatmeal, too. A bit bland, but decently balanced.
T: The flavor doesn’t come off as roasty as I thought it would from the nose. A light mocha character to start becomes a chocolaty finish. Mellow and balanced, almost to a fault.
M: This one feels a bit thin and insubstantial for me. I could use a bit more creaminess here, but it drinks easily.
O: This is decent. Well balanced, but could be great with a few tweaks.

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
The aroma fuses a strong current of chocolate with undercurrents of coffee and oats, but the appearance is an opaque black with a quickly dissipating tan head. The taste is quite umami, slightly bitter, and slightly sweet, which is very pleasing to the tongue because of the way the flavors nicely combine on the tongue; furthermore, the palate combines a bitter finish, medium body, oily texture, and a soft carbonation.
