Serving up cold and jet black, this imperial stout should be taken seriously for about one minute as the dark foam builds. Then, enjoy its velvety chocolate-covered smoothness and delicious aroma of sustainably-grown, locally-roasted coffee.

On tap and viscously dispensed to a snifter with an opague, black/brown color, brownish tan head froth, and decent, fairly lasting cling to the curtainy lacing. The aroma was dry, roastiness, ground coffee, and smooth malt, with a touch of burnt wood/smokiness. The flavor was similar notes, retaining the dryness, with medium, earthy hop bitterness, and some tanniny astringency. Medium+body, with very soft carbonation, no real esters or sweetness to speak of, but a soft bakerís chocolate emerging as it warmed. If you like crisp and dry, this is the RIS for you.

Bottle. Deep opaque brown body, medium clumping light brown head. Roasty nose with ashy coffee bean and chocolate; rather dry. Body sweeter than expected, creamy, with chocolate and ashy coffee bean; bitter and roasty finish. Soft and quite good, although not as complex or deep as most imperial stouts.

A very dark brown, with a light tan bubbly frothy head. Aroma of bitter coffee, very dark chocolate, but not much else. Very smooth with a bitter bite. Kinda simplistic, yet very good.

On tap at Capitol Beer & Tap Room, Sacramento. Pours near black with a nice tan head and a coffee aroma. There is a rich chocolate flavor with lots of coffee and a bitter finish. All the tastes blend nicely.

On tap, pours a pitch black color with a thick tan head that leaves great lacing. Smells of roasted malt, coffee beans and Chocolate. Tastes like coffee in beer form. Mouthfeel was thick and creamy with awesome carbonation. This is the best coffee stout Iíve had to date. Itís also the best beer Iíve had from New Belgiumís lips of faith series as well.

Pours black with a nice large head that almost looks like a chocolate milkshake. Head fades to a rim. Aroma of coffee, bread, hint of chocolate. Flavor is heavy on coffee, light chocolate, faint breadiness on the finish. Really rather good. Almost bordering on refreshing somehow, even though it is medium-full bodied. Nice.

Draft at Jerryís. Black with big, foamy, brown head / Rich nose of chocolate, fresh roast coffee, and tobacco / Full body, chewy and creamy, light acidity, some sweetness but mostly dry with good bitterness to stand up the big body / Toasty flavors of dark roast coffee, bittersweet chocolate, cigar box, grass, lemon, and caramel / What a great stout.

Pours black. smells like roasted coffee beans. A reasonably thick tan top. Very delicious imperial stout. Begins with coffee taste then chocolate takes over. Dark, nice, and robust like MCD (RIP)

UPDATED: FEB 12, 2013 Sampled in back-to-back comparison with a Great Divide Espresso Oak Aged Imperial Stout. The latter is noticeably sweeter, which is a good thing in this case. Pours thick black and completely opaque, even when held to direct sunlight. Large, creamy tan head is Smell: Big, roasted coffee and malt notes, with some dark chocolate notes. Taste: Roasted malt and coffee at first then ramps up into a strong, smoky espresso palate. Finishes bitter leaving the aftertaste of expresso. Mouthfeel: full body with very good carbonation. Overall: for expresso lovers only.
