Draft at the brewery. .. Roasty, fruity. .. Dark Brown, reddish hints. .. Fruity, sweet, boysenberry, some roast character. . . Med body, creamy. .. . Labelled ’pat’s stout - it’s not, it’s a great medium belgian brown beer with lots of interest.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Draft at Toronado. Pours very dark with a medium head. This beer is somewhat peculiar. It has flavors of chocolate and caramel together with distinct touches of Belgian yest which give it a tartness.
The beer is too thin-bodied though and it lacks depth.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
On draught at Papago: Pours to a dark black, though when held to light it doesn’t seem to be totally opaque and in fact more of a dark brown; small eggshell/light tan colored head that quickly fades. The aroma is quite mild, showing some chocolate, yeast, sweet chocolate covered malt, like others have mentioned an interesting mix of belgian yeasts and cocoa, though overall it’s still pretty mild. Taste is mild roasted malts, cocoa powder, and an earthy/fruity belgian yeast flavor with very mild hints of coffee. Light-medium bodied, medium carbonated, finishes pretty bland with some dry cocoa lingering. Overall I was turned off by this one due to the body being excessively watery and the flavors being interesting but ultimately too bland to really assert themselves in way that would provide some kind of uniqueness.

Segfault hooked me up with some of this fascinating concoction. Interesting roast and yeast aroma. Some earthy spiciness to the nose. Flavor is pretty roasty up front but as you drink more, the belgian vibes start coming through. Feels warming, yeasy and some more of those spices come through. This is an interesting beer. Not really anything that fits in a specific style. I’d like to see the body beefed up a bit more (felt too thin) and get some more caramel in there. That could make this shine.

On tap at the Falling Rock as part of the GABF 06 festivities. Clear black with lots of brown hightlights. Light easily passes through. Served with no head. Very creamy choco flavors with Belgian yeast character. Aroma was also very Belgian in character. Seemed very thin. Pretty let down.

After last year’s staggeringly good Lips of Faith offering, I was excited to try this one - but I ended up badly disappointed. This beer pours a deep black with brown highlights and a cream head. The aroma is a bizarre combination of belgian yeasts and cocoa, with the flavor offering the same contradictions. This baffles the taste with those curious yeasty flavors and then hot cocoa mix coming through with some sweetness; the combination simply doesn’t work for me. An ambitious but failed experiment, I didn’t bother to finish the glass.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Poured on tap in tulip glass at Brouwer’s. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, with some fruity esters and some sweetness. Appearance is dark brown with ruby highlights, medium head. Flavor is not as complex as the aroma, mainly a mild, chocolaty flavor with some malty (malted milk ball) notes. Mouthfeel is medium-full, rich. Overall a nice, drinkable stout with some slight Belgian-style characteristics.
