3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Sampled on 4/23/2012. This Belgian Strong Ale pours a somewhat cloudy, medium orange amber color from a 22oz bottle. Medium to large sized white foamy head. The aroma is fruity, sweet and, yeasty with strong hints of pears. A medium to full bodied Belgian Strong Ale. The malts are fruity and sweet. The hops are earthy and herbal. Decent carbonation. Lots of sweet malts and some earthy hops, add to that some interesting pear flavor and add some more sweetness. It is MOST definitely a ramped up Fat Tire. Interesting taste, I think I might be sipping on this one all night, which is not a bad thingÖ Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is sweet, yet there is some pear flavor to cut the sweetness at the finish.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
22 oz. bottle from Randallís. Have had it in the rot box for at least a couple years. One-time release? Anyway, it pours a cloudy orange with a small off-white head that settles quickly into a ring. Aroma of very sweet malts, bread, cookies, pears, apricots, and spices; bold Belgian character in the nose. Flavor of cookies, toasted sugar, toffee, dried apricot, and pear juice. Some phenols. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a dry, malty, boozy mouthfeel. A bit much. I see the Fat Tire in there but itís also buried under fruit and amped-up sweetness.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
New Belgiumís Lips of Faith Super Cru is kind of a weird variation of Fat Tire. I donít think Iíd want it often, but itís not bad. It pours a deep orange/tea color with not much head, and the brief suds donít hang around. The aroma is pears and malt. The flavor is like Fat Tire but with a Belgian yeast and pear juice, which is exactly what this beer is in the first place. The pears and Belgian yeast work together well; for my money, Belgian yeast is fruity, anyway. So this combination is fine. And the extra hops give it a little bit of a tingle at the end that reminds me of a Belgian style IPA. But something here ainít entirely right. I think itís the malt-forward Fat Tire thing that seems to be competing with everything else. Somewhere along the line this thing passes "complex" and becomes just hyper active. I didnít enjoy the second half of this bottle as much as the first.

Bomber thanks to Dallas. Pours a deep copper color with a medium white head. A rich berry nose and some yeast. The flavor is very sweet, residual sugars, lots of alcohol heat, some berries and dryness. OK at best.
