Bomber. Nose tart with generic fruit, lactic. Pour is a hazy orange-golden with a fizzy white head, bit leggy/oily. Very crisp and tart, zesty-sour but not extreme, light malt almost wheaten, with a milky feel under the effervescence. Lychee here is light and largely enveloped by general citrus and tart (lemon-grapefruit) -- you could have fooled me and said it was guava, passionfruit, even a blend of mango/cherry/grape. Low but very pleasant bitterness, and only gently sweet. Cinnamon does appear if I rush and gulp, paired with a slight scratch in the finish, but it’s excellent for subtle rounding. Faint wood and structure in the finish is very nice, especially in the absence of heavy vanilla. When I stop to think for a moment, I realize this is indeed a notch above some quick kettle sour with fruit slapped in -- there’s more character, class even, and most of that comes from the wood. [2016.07.16: 3.5]

After a second bottle: alcohol adds a little size but not warmth or flavor, and the lychee accumulates with solo drinking until it becomes quite prominent (and distinct, as opposed to 22oz earlier). Well done. [3.7]

From the Asheville brewery, this pours a hazy straw into the glass, with a decent soapy head that reduces to no lacing of which to speak. The nose is of woody sour mix. Flavors lean to the side of savory of a wild/sour ale. Sour mix, lemons, tons of woody oaken notes, Bing cherries, limes, raw grapefruit, cinnamon, lots of lychee citrus and pie spices finish with a lingering citric finish that has a nice gowing cinnamon spice, noted here especially in the effervescence, as it lingers on the tongue. The medium-light body, accompanied by the juicy mouthfeel and semi-zesty carbonation, make for a perfect savory-sour quaff to the palate. This wild ale is almost perfect... substantial and extremely complex, not just concentrating on the sours at hand, but integrating the cinnamon and spice extremely well! A superb example of a sour/wild ale with more to add than just.... well, sours. Kudos to New Belgium for this gorgeous offering.

Pailhead (6403) - Plymouth, Michigan, USA - JUL 9, 2016
Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate tart citrus, tropical fruit, lychee, and mild florals. It pours a mostly transparent golden-orange with a two finger white head that fades to a thin film outlined by a slightly thicker ring. There is a decent amount of thin webbing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with moderate tart citrus and lychee. There are some tropical fruits and peach in the middle. The finish has mild florals, lemon peel, and faint oak. It’s light bodied with light-moderate carbonation.

A sour aroma with hints of fruit. Pours a hazy caramel color without much of a head. A tarty fruity taste with a lighter body and tart finish.
