COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In a never-ending quest to create new beers and defy category, New Belgium Brewing and Brewerij Boon of Belgium have partnered together again to create Transatlantique Kriek - a spontaneously fermented lambic ale made with Polish cherries. This authentic kriek beer began life in the oaken vessels at Frank Boon’s brewery in the Lembeek region of Belgium. After more than two years aging, Boon’s offering shipped across the Atlantic and found its way to the intuitive palate of New Belgium’s Brewmaster Peter Bouckaert. After much sampling and internal consultation, Peter and his brew staff created a full-bodied golden lager to round out the light-bodied kriek. The cherry nose gives way to a pleasingly sour flash across the palate that rolls gently into a slightly sweet finish. Crisp, effervescent carbonation keeps the mouthfeel bright and delightfully tingly. Previously 6.3

Bland Kriek with limited cherry contribution. Some sour. Reddish color. Their story is better than the beer!

Pours bright red with pink hued foam. Aroma is tart with malt and cherry notes. Slight notes of almond butter as well. Flavor is quite sweet, almost too much. Crisp tart finish. Think it could be a bit heavier on the lager to make a more balanced beer

22oz Bottle. The pour was a clear medium cranberry red with a large (2-3 finger) pink rocky head that diminished at a rapid steady pace, down to a medium sudsy film and had excellent sticky sheets of lacing.

The aroma was of sweet bread malts and a funky barnyard Belgian yeast with notes of cherries, candi sugar and a hint of cask.

The taste was moderately sweet and just a tad malty with a huge fruitiness that was present throughout, giving way to a creeping mild sourness in around the middle with the finish being moderately yeasty with a strong fruity overtone. The flavor lasted only a short time following the swallow, with a mildly sweet fruity tartness fading from the taste buds.

Mouthfeel was somewhat light in body with a mildly dry texture and a champagne-like carbonation.

Overall this was a very good tasting Kriek that possessed a nice light sourness blended with a bold yeasty fruitiness, which did a great job of totally concealing the high ABV, making this Lambic extremely smooth, easy to drink and very enjoyable... www.facebook.com/KAJIIsBeerReviews

22 ounce bottle into globe glass, bottled on 1/2/2013. Pours fairly crystal clear pale ruby red color with a 1-2 finger dense light pink head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of tart cherry, cherry skin, apple, pear, grape, hay, light pepper, red wine, vinegar, funk, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance of cherry, yeast, and funk notes; with good strength. Taste of tart cherry, cherry skin, pear, apple, grape, hay, red wine, light pepper, light vinegar, light funk, and yeast earthiness. Light fruity tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of cherry, cherry skin, pear, apple, grape, red wine, light vinegar, light funk, and earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice balance and complexity of cherry and yeast flavors; with a good sweetness/tartness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a smooth, crisp, and lightly acidic mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very good fruit lambic style. Good balance and complexity of fruit and yeast ester flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Reddish pink pour lightly pink head with nice lacing. Funky aroma leather and cherries and some residual campfire that I’m sitting next to. Avg palate. Mellow Flavor touches of cherries a bit over carbonated a pale and weak finish. Not nearly as intense as I had expected.

22oz bottle, shared by Joe B. Very nice totally clear ruby red color. Little white head. Dots and ropes of lace. Good stronger cherry aroma. Medium body. Smooth, lighter carbonation. Lightly dry finish. Good moderate tart taste, light sweet. Nice light tannins and wood notes. Solid kriek.

For what NB set out to do, it's solid and they fulfilled their mission. As a fruit-forward beer, however, it's not as good as Founders' raspberry ale or Two Beers' High Divide cherry. The problem I believe is that it's too sweet, and doesn't have sufficient maltiness in backbone. As such, it borders just a little too close to wine cooler territory in flavor.
