In a never-ending quest to create new beers and defy category, New Belgium Brewing and Brewerij Boon of Belgium have partnered together again to create Transatlantique Kriek - a spontaneously fermented lambic ale made with Polish cherries. This authentic kriek beer began life in the oaken vessels at Frank Boonís brewery in the Lembeek region of Belgium. After more than two years aging, Boonís offering shipped across the Atlantic and found its way to the intuitive palate of New Belgiumís Brewmaster Peter Bouckaert. After much sampling and internal consultation, Peter and his brew staff created a full-bodied golden lager to round out the light-bodied kriek. The cherry nose gives way to a pleasingly sour flash across the palate that rolls gently into a slightly sweet finish. Crisp, effervescent carbonation keeps the mouthfeel bright and delightfully tingly. Previously 6.3

Bottle at Toronado. Nice sour cherry nose,, with some vanilla. Salmon-orange-pink color. Flavors of cherry, cream, very mild and fruity. Not very sour at all. Tasty but not exciting. Canít taste the Boon lambic.

650 ml. Copper-tinged red color and clear with a lasting disc of pink foam. Nose is sweet and lightly tart dark cherry; maybe some hints of earthy wood and dry leaf. Taste is the same mix, and less sweet than the aroma indicates. Itís not too sweet, but also has little tartness and no real outstanding flavor in any direction. Light-medium body is mildly astringent and has a high frothy carbonation. A decent balance is struck between the not overly-sweet cherry and the faint touches of sour and hop bittering. I guess there may be some oak in there too, but I didnít pick it up. OK, but provides no reason to be excited about having it again.

Bottle to glass. Pours a clear ruby red color with a light pink head. Aroma is quite mild, dry, hints of cherries, almost a touch of swimming pool. Flavor is quite sweet, lightly tart, with a big cherry kick. Lighter in body and drinkable. A nice outdoor sipping beer.

Sample pour deep merlot color. Aroma comet through as sweet red fruits and sherry, slightly sour. Flavor is sweeter red wine with light sour finishing notes. Deep fruits of raspberry and cherry, crisp. Flemish-like sour. Drinkable and nice

On tap at New Belgium. Appearance: 1.5 fingers white-pink head, red-pink color, clear, great lacing.. Aroma: cherry. Palate: dry finish, light body, lively carbonation. Taste: tart cherry. Overall, a great specialty beer. Not something I would want to drink a whole bomber of, but definitely worth getting ahold of.

On Tap at Whole Foods Boise. Clear ruby red witha skiff of a head. Dry tart cherry aroma. Not so much as teh recent Chery Berlinner Iíve had. More subtle cherry flavor and and an other wise miled slightly tart body. Dry and much less pucker than I anticipated....or hoped

Location: 22 oz bottle from Hay Merchant, 2/11/14

Aroma: The nose is fruity and sweet, with some mild wood and tart notes
Appearance: Pours a clear, bright reddish-pink color with a fizzy pink head and light lace
Flavor: The flavor is fairly heavy sweet, thereís some wood/tartness, but it leans sweet
Palate: The body is fairly light, with a lively carbonation, and mildly tart finish
Overall Impression: Iím was surprised this wasnít classified as a Lambic, but I guess fruit beer covers it. Anyway, this is a fairly sweet offering. Itís decent, but it could use a touch more tartness to balance it out. The sweetness just overwhelms everything else. Still, decent stuff.

25 jan 2014, bottle. Pink and clear. Nose is light cherries and straw malt and faint yeastiness. Thin body and faintly fizzy. Tastes like slightly tart cherry pie. Pretty good. Not very tart. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
