In a never-ending quest to create new beers and defy category, New Belgium Brewing and Brewerij Boon of Belgium have partnered together again to create Transatlantique Kriek - a spontaneously fermented lambic ale made with Polish cherries. This authentic kriek beer began life in the oaken vessels at Frank Boon’s brewery in the Lembeek region of Belgium. After more than two years aging, Boon’s offering shipped across the Atlantic and found its way to the intuitive palate of New Belgium’s Brewmaster Peter Bouckaert. After much sampling and internal consultation, Peter and his brew staff created a full-bodied golden lager to round out the light-bodied kriek. The cherry nose gives way to a pleasingly sour flash across the palate that rolls gently into a slightly sweet finish. Crisp, effervescent carbonation keeps the mouthfeel bright and delightfully tingly. Previously 6.3

Bottle at the Where the Wild Beers are event. Pours a clear kool-aid red with touches of white head. Cherries, light isopropyl, vinegar, and acid. Medium body, light cherry, light sour and lactic. Finishes with some crisp tartness.

Poured from bottle into a chalice glass Appearance- The beer pours a deep cherry red color with a one finger head of fizzy pink tinted foam. The head has a lighter level of retention fading over about a 5 min time frame to leave tiny bits of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the beer is full of a tart cherry aroma with some light notes of a bready smell. Along with these aromas comes some rather yeasty smells as well as a little bit of a grassy and hay aroma as well. Taste – The taste begins with a drier cherry flavor with just a bit of a more cracker like taste. While dry upfront, the cherry dries out even more, with most of the sugar being lost by the end of the taste. While this happens, the sour flavors begin kicking in with some sour green apple and cherry kicking in. With a little bit of a grass and some yeast and hay coming more toward the end, one is left with a quite dry and moderately sour and tart, but somewhat light for a proclaimed sour, flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the slightly thinner side in terms of thickness with a carbonation level that is rather high and prickly. The feel is rather nice for the drier cherry and slightly sour and tart flavors of the brew and makes it a bit more crisp and refreshing beer overall. Overall – Well not the greatest sour for the price out there in my mind, but it does have a clean and crisp feel with a very easy drinking cherry taste.

Bottle @ weekly tasting shared by Joes. Incredible dark red to purple color, small off-white head. Smell and taste only lightly cherries, quite a lot of butter unfortunately, lightly sweet. Quite low bodied and virtually no carbonation. Not very good imo. 6

Red with pink head. Aroma- sour cherry and funk. Taste- tart cherry, wheaty-yeasty malt and mild bitterness to round it out. I was expecting it to be sweeter, tastes like a sour ale. Refreshing and easy drinking at 8 ABV. Enjoyable but not great. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Purple-red color with small white head, good lacing. Cherry, amarena, just a little bit tart. After a while, the cherry stone comes through. No comparison to a proper Oude Kriek. If you wipe your Oude Kriek expectations off your mind, it’s okay. Carbonation is quite low.

Sample @ Leuven innovation Beer Festival #1 - Color: super nice clear deep red beer with no carbonation and small white foam. Apparence is really nice. Smell: cherries domination with small cherries kernel and almond finish. Really small sour finish. Taste: good cherries exposition really astringent beer but not so sour. Aftertaste: nice cherries finish, astringent and almond. Really nice and easy drinkable!

2015 bomber into snifter glass, bright ruby color with very light pink head. Aroma notes of tart cherries, berries, sugar and some hay funk. Taste adds some bread and faint wood. Light body, moderate-heavy carbonation, crisp with sweet cherry finish. More depth than a typical fruit beer, tasty and easy drinking.

Poured a dark ruby red with a fluffy pink head that left lacing. Aroma is sour and tart cherries with strong farmhouse yeast. Taste is tart cherries, light bready malts, and sour yeast. Medium bodied with light carbonation and a dry wine like finish.

Bottle. Ruby red, low head. Cherry wine aroma. Medium dry body. Ever so slightly tart, light fruit, mineral, wood. Medium body. Certainly not a Kriek.
