3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
651 ml. bottle. Pours a medium, poorly retained, light beige head, over a clear ruby brown (SRM 24) body....nose is sweet malts, with light dried fruits including fig, date, cinnamon, hints of funk.....taste is slightly sweet, cola tones, leading to barnyard funk, light cinnamon, light pepper tingle, finishing semi sweet.....mouth feel light of medium, quite sticky, alcohol hidden, carbonation low. This is really not a Dubbel. The simple malt back bone is not forward enough and lacks complexity in both aroma and flavor. It has a very light mouth feel, and the exotic ingredient adds little. Another unsuccessful experiment from New Belgium. BJCP 6/2/12/4/5

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
22 ounce bottle - $8.48 at Sherlock’s in Kennesaw, Georgia.
Appearance: Pours a clear, garnet-hued body with an initially foamy, but, quickly receding, off-white head. Slim lace coating.
Smell: Sweet-scented, moderately spicy, and with transient, less-than-potent notes of pink peppercorn, cinnamon, tobacco, chocolate, brown sugar, and bubblegum-flavored vodka.
Taste: Sour berries enveloped generously in brown sugar and spice atop some light toast, light chocolate. Bubblegum. A little snap of sharp herb. Fairly sweet, still. Pepper, tobacco on the back half and into the spicy-sweet, warming finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation. A bit silken.
Overall: Wild². Not bad, but certainly not great, either. Like the film Prometheus, I’m just happy to have made my way through it.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
This was a strange dubbel/strong as it definitely has some tartness and funk, mostly up front. An okay beer. Definitely different than most Belgians.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Appearance: dark clear purple with one finger of very creamy light tan head, poured into a chimay goblet. Aroma: very fruity, with cherries, raisin, fig, prunes, all in syrup, with cinnamon, clove, and graham cracker; hint of leather and pipe tobacco. Taste: as the aroma indicates--pretty sweet, with fruit, clove, and dark brown bread. Finish: fruity and lightly sweet, with light dryness and lasting yeasty clove. Notes: Interesting. They bill it as a dubbel, but some of the traditional dubbel maltiness and candi sugar notes were definitely absent in favor of increased fruitiness. Nevertheless, the interesting fruit characteristics made this a pretty decent beer. Beerdvent 2013, day 24.

From a bottle. Pours dark brown with a thin fizzy off white head. Tastes slightly sour, dry, with light herbs, grass, some bitter hops, light citrus. Light/medium body and low carbonation. Smells musky and grassy, stale and leathery.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Growler fill from Aw Shucks. Pours a dark amber red, good initial head fades to nothing, clear. Aroma lightly of sweaty socks, a hint of dark fruit. Flavor is a bit like a cross between a weizenbock a dubbed, and La Folie. Some clove up front, along with a touch of sweaty sock. Middle of the beer is caramel malts and cherry. Finish is lightly spicy, with pepper and a bit more clove. Rather liked this one, good complexity. Wish it had been just a bit more full bodied.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Brown pour, nice head. The smell is slightly tart, fruity, plenty of schisandra. The flavor is real good. Has notes of juniper, cedar, and brett. Slight bubblegum aftertaste. Nothing like a dubbel but a nice brew.
