3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bomber. Dark brown and clear. A beige head has good retention. A funky aroma is a little like crotch along with complex fruit. The flavor has that bacteria and a little heat. Chocolate and grain. I begin to taste raisins and toffee and near the finish a hint of anise. The bacteria here is definitely different from what I have tasted in other Lips of Faith beers.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from Total Wine, Sacramento. Pours dark amber with a thick beige head and a cherry and treacle aroma. There is a rich spiced brown malt flavor with a dry finish. The flavor is strangely medicinal, probably from the Shisandra. Not a typical Dubbel, but pretty interesting.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
The appearance has a pure dark black colored body with a thin half fingered white foamy head that dies within about thirty seconds. Lacing concaves decently around the sides of the glass.
The smell is interesting as its slightly sour almost like sour cherries, yet still a light sweet element of dark chocolate.
The taste is mainly sweet still has that sour element comes back to just put a light punch on the tastebuds. There is a light sour cherry - perhaps closer to just fruity berries (I’m guessing its this East Asian berry called "schisandra"). I get this same fruitiness in the aftertaste with a light dry sweet finish.
On the palate, it sits about a medium on the body with a carbonation that is decent for the style of a dubbel and does show a decent acceptability of the "sour" style of harshness pervading the tongue; not really sessionable - its a sipper.
Overall, I think New Belgium did what they wanted to do with this - its a dubbel and shows enough qualities of one and still shows some light qualities of a "sour" but aren’t overbearing from the "sour" style. For me, well, actually, sours aren’t my true beer of style but since this one actually stays closer to a dubbel, I think I could do this again.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Appearance - Pours chocolate brown with foamy light tan moderate head.
Aroma- Not very strong aroma. Faint scent of figs, dates, dark berries.
Taste- Malt hits first with a bubblegum taste. In the finish, sour berries, hints of black pepper and a minimal amount of hops.
Palate - the full flavor hits and vanishes quickly. Mouthfeel is thin and watery.
As far as dubbels go, not my favorite but not the worst. Just not a fan of that sweet bubblegum taste.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
650 ml. Pours a lightly foggy chestnut color with a lasting spongy half inch of foam. Big aroma of clove, date, banana and raisin with touches of earthy toasted grain and wood. Initial tastes of spicy raisin, prune and banana with some toasted grain are excellent. These flavors give way to a finish that has a little too much cinnamon and cardboard, but fortunately it’s not too overpowering or distracting. Small hints of white pepper and red wine are nice. Medium body is soft and smooth, and finishes pretty dry given all the malty richness. Pretty good, but aging might help to take the cinnamon edge off this one.

It has a lot of ingredients, so it has to be complex, right? Eh, not so much. Just a muddled mess. pass.
