Yuzu is a strange fruit- citrusy and bold. Those three words: strange, citrus and bold are the perfect beginnings for a great beer. So, our brewers paired yuzu with the sourness of a Berlinerweiss to create this beerlicious Yuzu Berlinerweiss. Brewed with pale malt and wheat this Berlinerwiess was acidified with Lactobacillus for a light, dry mouthfeel and tart refreshment. Hazy and straw-colored, the yuzu fruit brings a tropical charm to a traditional beer.

Bomber bought at Super 1 in CDA, ID. Packaged June 2013, so about four months old. Aroma smells like dusty old books, musty basements, sex, citrus, cotton candy, cat piss. Pours hazy pale yellow with a quickly collapsing white head. Taste is both sweet and tart (7/10 on a sour scale), before turning a little bitter and dry. Fruity flavors mingle with the funk provided by the lacto, creating an interesting beer. Thin-bodied and highly carbonated. Definitely worth a taste, but not too impressive right now. Maybe some time in the cellar would do it some good.

Tap at Freshcraft. Pours a hazy golden with minimal head. Aromas of citrus juice, raw wheat, light tartness and orange peel. The palate is dry and somewhat chalky, with flavors of lemon cleaner, candied lemon peel, subtle wheat, and a touch of lacto. Watery body with a dry finish. Hoped for more.

Not very sour for a Berlinerweiss. Strange, but interesting fruit addition. Dark straw color with medium head.

Tap at Fresh Craft, Denver. Poured a hazy light amber with a round white head. The aroma is fresh yeast. The flavour is acidic and very weak sour with an acid yeast citrus banana watery palate.

I reAlly liked this. The sourness is immediate and is completed with a sour citrus as well. Astringent yet with a light finish,a good beer whose alcohol content is incredible for the style, as it retains the overall lightness one would expect. Yummy.

Gold pour, white head. Bullshit example of the style. Fruity and boozy. WTF. If I had paid for this I would ask for my money back.

Draft at Proof. Clear golden pour with a small white head. Fruity alcoholic aroma and not much else. Weird fruity aspect throughout with booze. Thick and not refreshing. Aren’t they defeating the purpose of Berlinerweiss?

On tap @ Cafe Benelux, Milwuakee. Medium gold, very little head. Aroma is sweet and fruity, soft esters. The palate is quite heavy and sticky for a supposed Berlinerweiss. Not at all tart or sour. Decent as a Belgian ale, but an utter failure as a Berlinerweiss.

At new Belgium. Pours golden slightly cloudy. Aroma is lemon hit of funk. Taste is funky lemon citrus yeast.
