Yuzu is a strange fruit- citrusy and bold. Those three words: strange, citrus and bold are the perfect beginnings for a great beer. So, our brewers paired yuzu with the sourness of a Berlinerweiss to create this beerlicious Yuzu Berlinerweiss. Brewed with pale malt and wheat this Berlinerwiess was acidified with Lactobacillus for a light, dry mouthfeel and tart refreshment. Hazy and straw-colored, the yuzu fruit brings a tropical charm to a traditional beer.

Draft on tap at Bavarian Lodge (Lisle, IL). Iím not gonna lie.. Iím pretty happy I donít actually have to buy a bottle of this. Pours a more hazy straw yellow hue, a bit darker, almost cloudy and murky with a frothy white brighter head atop. Some good stick around as a decent layer overall. Aromas show wheaty and bready malts, a bit doughy, flaked wheat starts to show some gentle fruit presence. A bit of lemon, some tartness is subtle and fleeting, getting a touch grainy and dry on the nose, yeast presence and a faint touch of yogurt. Initial is a mellow tart hit quickly moving to a more yeast driven front, a bit dry and firmly spicy. The wheaty malt base is a bit doughy and firm, some citrus fruit meets gentle straw, grass. Middle sweetens this up considerably, doughy malts meet some more apple, pear elements. A bit sweet, some gentle lactic acidity, citrus or what I presume to be "Yuzu" hits a bit but just canít keep up. A bit sweet into the backend, a touch of bitterness at times. The lactic element really never gets off the ground. A touch too sweet and underdeveloped, Iím not quite sure why this has to be such a high ABV either. Meh. I guess I could drink this again but itís just nothing like itís advertised as.

Yuzu dominant in taste and smell. Nice tartness and spice. This is not a Berliner Weisse though, not even close. maybe an imperial saison....

Bomber bought at Super 1 in CDA, ID. Packaged June 2013, so about four months old. Aroma smells like dusty old books, musty basements, sex, citrus, cotton candy, cat piss. Pours hazy pale yellow with a quickly collapsing white head. Taste is both sweet and tart (7/10 on a sour scale), before turning a little bitter and dry. Fruity flavors mingle with the funk provided by the lacto, creating an interesting beer. Thin-bodied and highly carbonated. Definitely worth a taste, but not too impressive right now. Maybe some time in the cellar would do it some good.

Tap at Freshcraft. Pours a hazy golden with minimal head. Aromas of citrus juice, raw wheat, light tartness and orange peel. The palate is dry and somewhat chalky, with flavors of lemon cleaner, candied lemon peel, subtle wheat, and a touch of lacto. Watery body with a dry finish. Hoped for more.
