Yuzu is a strange fruit- citrusy and bold. Those three words: strange, citrus and bold are the perfect beginnings for a great beer. So, our brewers paired yuzu with the sourness of a Berlinerweiss to create this beerlicious Yuzu Berlinerweiss. Brewed with pale malt and wheat this Berlinerwiess was acidified with Lactobacillus for a light, dry mouthfeel and tart refreshment. Hazy and straw-colored, the yuzu fruit brings a tropical charm to a traditional beer.

Tasted on 9/15/13 from a capped 650mL bomber bottle purchased at Midtown. Pours clear straw with an average white head that recedes rather quickly to thin lace. The nose is lightly sweet tropical fruit and nicely tart with an interesting citrus aroma, and a touch of sour mash wheat malt as well. The flavor is the same, starting off with a sweet, tropical fruit note, moving to the tartness that comes from both the strange citrus fruit and the sour wheat malt. The body is almost full and somewhat sticky, with lively, stinging carbonation and a long fruity and tart finish.

Pours a bright golden orange...Aromas of yeast, light tart, and a touch of fruit. Starts a little wheaty and goes sourish. Wanted more "SOUR".

On tap at Peel Pizza. Pours a slightly hazy yellow with a small but persistent white head. Aroma is lemon and spice. Taste is sweet pale malt, lemon pudding, some bread dough, very mild tartness, thin texture and mouthfeel, smooth and pleasant. Sweeter and much less tart than a true Berliner weisse, but quite good and very drinkable.

December 27th, 2013 - Yuzu is one of my favorite Japanese flavors, and so much so that it might trump the usual gaijin’s obsession with green tea and matcha. My favorite manifestation is in ramen (served near Harajuku station) but I can see where it might play well with beer. Optimism high, I poured out this next brew in the Lips of Faith series, kicking up a huge corky head over hovering over a slowly circulating golden body. Once that wall of bubbles died down I began to sense a smell like a Berlinerweisse, composed of lemon, butter, dandelion, pear, and pastry dough. It’s sweet, but dry at the same time, like a Prosecco, with a more pointed citrus character. True to form, the palate is light and fluffy, and the first crash of the flavor reminds me of ponzu, or other kinds of gyoza dipping sauce. This couldn’t be more spot on with my expectations, and while I’m sure this falls short on technical points, that curious Zuzu taste of lemon and orange with a short aftertaste and a touch of booze is exactly how I imagined a yuzu beer would come to be.

Tap at Biertempel. Funky yuzu nose, light yogurt, cream, lemon, acid. Cloudy, glowing gold, fine head. Bit yuzu is pretty nice, then brett, some lactic acid, wheat. Not all that impressive, but ok. Maybe needs more time to let enbrett work more. Sweet, unbalanced.
