Commercial Description:
Deep amber brown with a dense off-white head, Dunkelweiss 30° rediscovers Hefeweiss beers through a Belgian brewer’s lens. Envisioned by our own Matty “Smooth” Gilliland, this beer opens with sweet clove and banana notes that give way to a chocolaty warm finish with a peppery tingle across the palate. “I thought it would be fun to make a German wheat beer; we’ve explored the Belgian wheats pretty thoroughly,” said Gilliland. “Since this is Lips of Faith – and part of what makes that program fun is to make beers that are really unique and different – making a big, strong, dark Weiss beer sounded pretty folly-licious. It’ll still showcase all of the flavors that a Hefeweiss beer would have, but add in the burly body and extra punch. Think of it as a Grand Cru dunkelweiss.”

Tasted on tap at the Celebrator Best of the West Beerfest on 2/15/2009. This dunkel pours a dark brown color from the tap. Medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is caramel and sweet, a touch funky. A medium bodied dunkel. The malts are caramel, wheaty and sweet. The hops are earthy. It’s a touch funky and musty, but mostly sweet and malty. Nice carbonation. Nice beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean, crisp and dry. Aftertaste is slightly sweet and spicy.

On tap @ AZ Strong Beer Festival. Mississippi mud with a hint of rust and small eggshell head. Decent amount of carbonation with ignited the tastebuds. Vanilla, yeast, banana, and caramel both in the nose and taste. Good brew.

Crushed with Jakebra at BSAF. Poop and wheat on the nose. This is actually the best dunkel I’ve had. Wheat, mild roast, and awesomeness in the flavor. Excellent flavor is a pleasant surprise after the nose.

On tap at the AZ Strong Beer fest. Pours a murky brown with thin tan head. The nose is sour wheat, coriander and malt. The taste is wheat, toasted malt, spice and mild bubblegum. Medium prickly body. Pretty good.

Pours clear ruddy brown with a thin tan head. The nose and flavor are sweet with toffee and caramel. Nice dry finish.

Had on draught at Trinity Brewing. Color is a deep brown with hint of amber. Carbonation is good with a thick head. Aroma is a big bananna scent. Taste comes on a medium body with a big bannan flavor and a touch of roasted malt, then a mild bitterness. After taste is a lingering bananna taste. Its a nice rich brew, but the bananna is a bit dominant.

For my 900th rating. What luck that I found this on draft at the Little Rock Flying Saucer. Pours a nice milky brown with decent light tan head. Notes of sweet vanilla, raisin, plum, banana, and cotton candy. Hands down the best dunkel I’ve EVER had. Terrific! I wish I had had more than one glass...

On tap at Bailey’s Taproom. I really can’t believe the ratings on this, maybe it was a bad keg, but this was so overly sweet I couldn’t finish even a small glass. over-ripe banana, cloyingly sweet, brown sugar, with a heavy syrupy palate. Tastes like an awful smoothie of sorts. The bartender said some people really like this, maybe just not my thing, but I normally like German dunkelweizens.
