Commercial Description:
Deep amber brown with a dense off-white head, Dunkelweiss 30° rediscovers Hefeweiss beers through a Belgian brewer’s lens. Envisioned by our own Matty “Smooth” Gilliland, this beer opens with sweet clove and banana notes that give way to a chocolaty warm finish with a peppery tingle across the palate. “I thought it would be fun to make a German wheat beer; we’ve explored the Belgian wheats pretty thoroughly,” said Gilliland. “Since this is Lips of Faith – and part of what makes that program fun is to make beers that are really unique and different – making a big, strong, dark Weiss beer sounded pretty folly-licious. It’ll still showcase all of the flavors that a Hefeweiss beer would have, but add in the burly body and extra punch. Think of it as a Grand Cru dunkelweiss.”

choice city. Extrm dark brown. Huge wheat heavy clove smell and flavor - creamy toasted wheat and spiced banana. Reminded of Aventinus - rich, sweet, syrupy, malt heavy, zero to no hop bitterness. Rich and tangy finish.

Tasted on tap at the Celebrator Best of the West Beerfest on 2/15/2009. This dunkel pours a dark brown color from the tap. Medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is caramel and sweet, a touch funky. A medium bodied dunkel. The malts are caramel, wheaty and sweet. The hops are earthy. It’s a touch funky and musty, but mostly sweet and malty. Nice carbonation. Nice beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean, crisp and dry. Aftertaste is slightly sweet and spicy.

On tap at Falling Rock poured a clear reddish brown with a small diminishing amber head. Aromas of carmel, banana, bubblegum and clove. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of burnt carmel, clove and light bubblegum with a smooth spiced finish.

Draught. Pours dark brown with a large, frothy, light brown head, mostly lasting with good lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cookie, caramel, straw, nutty), average hops (flowers, herbs, grass), heavy yeast (barnyard, broth, earth) with notes of banana, dates, plum, and nutmeg. Full bodied, sticky texture, lively carbonation, and a bitter finish. Long duration, moderate sweetness and bitterness, light acidity.

Tap @ Stone today. Pours deep brown muddy looking with a tan ring. Nose is sweet and spiced. Taste is sweet, spiced, with lots of flavor, cinnamon, great taste, lots of spice, too much spice for me. With a good punch of pumpkin in here as well it feels like a cheaper imitation of 2008 Ichabod from Alpine.

Draft. Rich dark mahogony beer with a dark-cream colored head. Big malty, light spice/clove aroma. Very rich caramel flavor with some dried fruit and a bit of spice. Medium-plus bodied. Rich caramel lingers with some nice malty sweetness and some dried fruit. Wheat gets a little lost, but this is a great rich caramel beer.

Draught @ Brouwer’s Café:   Really dark brown, almost black, very thick, large frothy off-white head, very sticky lacing.   Looks good.   Spicy nose, anise and perhaps licorice fern.   Reminds me of the root, digging them up as a kid.   Has a hint of earthiness as well.   Quite spicy on the tongue.   Licorice and all-spice.   Has a touch of dark pitted fruit.   Mouthfeel is good, almost wheaty like but also like a Dubbel.   This is better than I expected.  Unique too.   I can only hope this will be bottled so I can take it home with me.   Full bodied.   Clove, yeah, that’s it.   Not so much Banana but the Clove is strong.   I really enjoyed this one.   I would love to have again.
