Commercial Description:
Deep burnished gold with a slight haze, Le Fleur Misseur opens with pineapple, clove and honey notes. Dry-hopping produces a flower leaf aroma supported by tones of fresh bread and honey. Le Fleur finishes dry and slightly herbal. Produced for New Belgium coworkers to celebrate our 15th anniversary, Le Fleur has roots in the earliest days of our history. In 1988 founder Jeff Lebesch sat weary on the side of a Belgian road when a young lad passing by picked a delicate yellow flower and offered it to Jeff. “Le Fleur, Misseur?” Jeff misspelled the boy’s comment in his journal as he accepted the offering. A treasured memory, a beer to treasure. Brewed in honor of the New Belgium’s 15th anniversary. It is a tip of the hat to Orval.

Huge, airy, frothy foam, similar to Orval over the clear golden body. Nose shows traces of brett, along with other notes of peach and hops. Flavor is very nice, with similar dryness as Orval. Doughy malts, with light traces of fruit and funk, with a touch of hops as well. A very nice example of a style most brewers don’t commercially attempt. I really wish New Belgium would put creative stuff like this in bottles.

Pour is a pale gold with a fizzy white head. Aroma is floral and very close to a herbal tea. Flavor is a little bit mango and a little bit honeydew. It is very easy to drink with not much aftertaste. This is something good but not great as it gets a bit thin toward the end.

On tap at the Falling Rock Tap House in Denver, hazy blonde hue, with a white head, nice floral herbal nose of dandelion, with a mild funky yeastiness accent, with a bready dough, light fruity pear, citrusy, with an earthy hop leafy aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a nice apple sourness, wet oaky, funky, yeasty character, with a faint lemon tartness, with a spicy flowery hop accent, with a hint of juicy brett, leading towards an acidic, lemony, tart finish.

On tap at Flying Saucer KC. Pour hazy straw with a bit of white head. The aroma and flavors are more lemony than anything. Decent pilsner malt character. Very light body, high carbonation, and a dry finish. With that said, I didn’t see a hole lot of similarities to Orval.

Tasted 2/29/08. 750ml bottle, 2007 edition. Heady citrus earthy hop white caverous head. Quickly dissipating head. Musty oaky and smooth. Good effervescence. Smooth, so smooth. Big and fruity. Fresh yet melded. Flavors of citrus and red berries. Touch cereal grains. Good dry and musty. Cinnamon peppery and spicy. So much smoother than the other Sours. So much milder. Touch bready yeast. Easy with a great flavor. What an opportunity! Thanks to Ryan from NBB for this total treat!

Draft shaker pint at Flying Saucer in Kansas City, MO. Pour is a cloudy yellow golden orange, with a white head. Visible carbonation bubbling up to the top of the glass. Aroma is citrus sweetness and some Belgian yeast spiciness. Taste is light bodied, with a wheatiness to and an earthy sourness. The sour is not particularly pronounced, more like what you would find in a mild Wiitbier. Some tart pineapple flavor. The finish contained the yeasty spiciness and was quite dry. The yeast is really the dominant component of the flavor. I did not really find this too much in common with Orval in this one, but it was still an enjoyable beer. Nice and thirst quenching.

My 22 oz bottle looked different from the c&c one pictured here and was marked Lips of Faith. It poured a cloudy golden color with a fat white head and moderate lacing. Nose is spicy, with coriander and floral hops. Medium but somewhat oily mouthfeel. Flavor is on sweet and dry side with some citrus flavors, and the finish is dry as well.

My understanding is that New Belgium and Red Rock (UT) both brewed versions of this, and Red Rock’s is sitting in oak right now. Anyway, pours a cloudy orange color with a medium white head. The aroma is herbal, oranges, sweet and lots of yeast. A sweet marmalade flavor, rich delicate dandelions, herbs pepper and yeast. Slightly odd funk in the finish. Pretty decent.
