COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Oscar is New Belgiumís dark sour ale aged in oak foeders at the brewery. It is blended in various proportions in many of New Belgiumís sour wood-aged beers, such as La Folie.

How to tell youíre rating the Oscar version of Love: the beer should be dark caramel to brown in color. May be called "Oscar" without mention of "Love".

This is pretty much the perfect beer for me. Dark murky color. Nose is full of funk. Flavor is very complex. I am talking oak, red wine, cherries, and a layer of funk. It goes without saying, but this is tart and finishes dry. Not a lick of sweetness, which is what I am after in a sour beer. I had various samples of oscar last week at the NB event at Black Squirrel in DC. Some were more tart, some more sharp, some had a brightness, some were a bit sweeter (this is relative to the others). All were amazing. I would be happy to drink these straight every day and never drink something else. Got to taste with some stinky cheese. This was another revelation. After taking a bite of stinky cheese, the flavor in this beer exploded. I recommenced everyone try La Folie with a ripe stinky cheese.

This was served on tap as part of a flight at The Thirsty Monk in Asheville (compared to Foudre #1, Foudre #17 - different casks at New Belgium, and Liefmanís Goudenband). A very sharp tartness on the mid-tongue. A little less funk in the middle as compared to #17.

This was served on tap as part of a flight at The Thirsty Monk in Asheville (compared to Foudre #1, Foudre #28 - different casks at New Belgium, and Liefmanís Goudenband). This was a little less sour with more cherry than #1. Almost a bit of dirt/gritty/funk in the middle. Quite good and I prefer more than #1.

Purchased a 32 oz growler, poured in to a flute. Color is murky brown with a minimal off white head. Strong coffee aroma, smells vinegary and funky. Medium / strong sour taste up front, then tons of coffee. Also had a woody flavor as well as hints of cherry. Coffee flavor comes out again in the aftertaste. It has Medium body with distinct but tolerable acidity and itís dry, but not overly so. Overall, this beer is amazing and I will definitely buy it again. One of the best sours Iíve had in a while. Highly recommended.

Essentially a less subtle, less smooth La Folie, which means itís damn good. Big sour punch up front, dry and tart, with some fruitiness and a really nice mouthfeel. Tons of flavor yet very drinkable. I had 2 pints during CBC and wish I could have had more...

On tap at Smoke & Barrel. Much lighter acidity than the Felix. Dark fruits and a bit of cherry and oak. Medium body. Fairly dry finish.

Sample at stone sour ale fest 2010. Hazy dark reddish pour. This was really good, one of the best sours at the fest. Lightly bready malt, cherries, fruit, very tart, leather, grass, herbal, and finishes with nicely integrated hops. Well done, very good.

Served cool in a room temp snifter from a no CO2 keg. Dark Carmel color, foam ring with coffee color. Subtle bitter aroma. Dry with a sour apple finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
