What’s that bite of tartness doing in a pumpkin beer? Adding the unexpected kick of cranberry juice to brighten this traditionally spiced seasonal ale. PUMPKICK is brewed with plenty of pumpkin juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice, but it’s the cranberries and touch of lemongrass that send your tastebuds sailing.

New Belgium seems to be showing off some experiments lately, this one was pretty good. It’s exactly how the bottle describes it. Most pumpkin ales that pop up in fall are pretty similar, with some going overboard on the nutmeg and allspice and winding up crappy, but the cranberry undertone of this one sets it apart.

New Belgium Pumpkick is a nice twist on a seasonal brew. Pours deep orange with a decent head. Aroma is lightly tart. Taste has an interesting backbone of seasonal spices but with a prominent tartness that doesn’t go overboard -- probably more appropriate for the tail end of Fall getting close to Thanksgiving. Either way, the combination works for an occasional mix in the lineup. Pumpkick is an interesting change-up in the field of Fall seasonals.

bottle @ Florence Freedom game --- Clear medium amber color, ivory head that stays awhile, curtain of lace. Taste is malt with light pumpkin, hardly any spice. Very little bittering, as the pumpkin is bitter enough. I can drink it, but why would I want to?

One of the very best pumpkin brews that I have tried! Aroma and taste are muted pumpkin spice, and leaning more to total herbal beer. Cranberry and lemongrass make important contributions!

The aroma is pumpkin spices, caramel, pumpkin, bread. The appearance is slightly hazy deep amber, white head. The flavor is spices, cinnamon, pumpkin, bread. The finish is cinnamon, nutmeg, spicy. Medium, slightly thick in body. Noot bad at all. A bit routine.

Hazy amber, thin head. Spicy, any pumpkin? This has a fair bit of sweetness, sugary, fairly spicy. Clean, basic pumpkin beer.

Draft - Spiced pumpkin pie notes. Cloudy amber with a small beige head. Pumpkin and light spice. Not too sweet or spicy but not getting any of the cranberries or lemongrass. Not bad for a pumpkin beer.

Normally I hate pumpkin beers (and August is still way too soon to release a fall seasonal). Anyway, I feel like NB had a good idea to add the cranberry juice, which to borrow from their commercial description, "brightens" it up. The little kick of acidity prevents this from being overly pumpkiny and the spicing is mercifully mild. Honestly they could probably drop the spices to make this just a little better. Light bodied, semi-sweet. Elements of all the ingredients are found in the aroma and flavor, with the pumpkin and cranberry more or less sharing equal footing.

On tap at St. Augustine’s, pours a hazy orange amber with a small white head. Aroma brings out lots of nutmeg and cinnamon upfront, with maybe a little pumpkin purée. Flavour is uninspired, with a lot of nutmeg and cinnamon. Not much actual pumpkin. A spice bomb. Decent.

Appearance: Hazy ruddy amber body with a dense and frothy tan head. Thick coating.
Aroma: Cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg come out with a creamy sort of chai aroma. Definitely smells like pumpkin things.
Taste: Pumpkin spices are upfront and there’s a bit of tartness from the pumpkin, but I definitely get a bit of cranberry and lemon as the description implies. Pumpkin spices and flavor are the big flavors, but this is interesting.
Palate: Light to medium bodied with a slightly oily texture. Moderate carbonation.
Overall: Interesting beer, I’d consider buying it again.

Smells great as you pour from the bottle. Nice amber color. Complex flavor with spices and pumpkin nicely complicated by tart cranberries. Tastes great!
