3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Served in the wrong (pilsner) glass, poured from a bomber.
Aroma: Light floral & pine. Yep, pine.
Appearance: More pale golden than expected, pours clear. Flattened, but probably the glass.
Taste: Strongly pine, typical American hop. More pear/apple than citrus. Bitter in a good way, if not slightly sharp. Lingers.
Palate: Again, bitter finish. Lighter bodied than expected. Dry is not unfair.
Overall: A lighter DIPA, almost quaffable. But I’m a degenerate.
Good beer at a good price. I will buy this again as a potential dinner beer, but not special occasion beer (as with Dale’s Pale Ale or Titan IPA). This beer reminds me how spoiled we are.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: JAN 2, 2015 Draft golden. Nose some dank hop, but overwhelming vegetal, like broccoli. Taste bitter hop, some floral. Thankfully the vegetal smell doesn?t carry through the taste. Perhaps a bad keg, a little disappointing for New Belgium. (original rate 2.6)
Rerate. This time bottle pour. Nose no vegetal. Some resin, papaya, and sweeter fruit hop. Taste bitter and sweet up front. Moderate lingering bitter finish. . Much better than the first time.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 oz bottle: Pours light yellow, big fluffy head. Aroma of citrus hops and heavy malt backbone. Taste is balanced with good bitter hop flavor and heavy malt. Too much malt for my preference in the style. A little astringent on the palate, not easy to drink after about 1/2 way through the glass. Pretty good, strong IPA but not the best example of the style.

Citrus, Herbal, earthy aroma. Citrus/grapefruit, spicy, floral/herbal hop flavors--with lingering sweetness, and a little light caramel and bready malt. An apricot-like flavor in finish. Pretty substantial bitter aftertaste.

Why the low ratings on this? Its just ranger with a bit more hops and alcohol, it tastes great and is reasonably priced. There is something about being called a double ipa that creates unreasonably high expectations among beer raters. I gaurantee you if this were sold and classified as a standard ipa, it would get much higher ratings and people would agree that it is an improvement on ranger. Of course its not as sophisticated and balanced as the heavywieghts of the style, but did anyone expect that from new belgium? Remember that your paying 8 per six pack and just enjoy and stop comparing to hopslam.

Bottle. Aroma of hops and orange zest. The taste starts off with a layered hop profile, with some sweetness in the middle and finishes with a nice bitterness. Great IPA, better than their Ranger beer. 8.5% alcohol.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Big and piney nose and flavor profile. Fairly dry all over the place. It’s a decent DIPA, and really you can’t beat $8 a 6er! Will buy off and on this summer for sure.

DIPA version of their Ranger. If you like Ranger you’ll like this. There is a similar hop profile only more so and the malt profile is similar but also more potent.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On draught at Yard House in Scottsdale. The beer is a clear copper-amber color with a medium off-white head that dissipates slowly to a film. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of piney hops and roasted malt. Medium body with a resiny hops character and notes of toasted malt and fruit. The finish is moderately bitter with an earthy hops aftertaste. Decent overall.
