Fall is here and with it our seasonal ale, Red Hoptober. Shining like autumn leaves in a globe glass this beer pours a dark and lovely garnet as it builds a bright, inviting head. The Eldorado hops are bold and present with a distinct, piney flavor while the caramel malt and roasted barley provide a backbone to stand Red Hoptober upright. Centennial and Cascade hops offer hints of citrus, tickling the nose, while the tongue carries a subtle, roasty tone that pairs pleasantly with the warming bite of bitter. Red Hoptober is perfect for shortening days and campfire nights.

This is what it would be like to eat a mouthful of hops, if the hops were cold and wet instead of dry and leafy. Eventually some malt comes through. This beer is very hop forward, but not terribly bitter.

Purchased in a six pack from Paul’s Grocery in McCall, Idaho. Pours a clear dark copper color raising a medium sized beige head and light lacing. Nose of roasted malt with some citrus and floral hops. Medium in body. Flavor is a good balance of malts and the hops, with some chocolate in the malts and pine in the hops. The finish is slightly bitter and dry . Good for the style.

Bottle as shown. Pours a cloudy amber with a small beige head. The aroma is floral hop and spice. Thin mouthfeel with a light spice and fruit malt with nice lingering bitter finish. A good amber ale from New Belgium.

Pours clear brown with a medium beige head, fine lacing. Aromas of pine, nuts, toast, and chocolate. Medium-light body, creamy and zesty, lightly dry. Little sweetness, a hint of citrus, then a lasting medium bitter finish. Very drink able. Big and interesting for an amber.

One of the better reds I have had, really nice balance with good hop profile balanced by the sweet malt. Nice body for the style with great lacing. Highlights are the flavor and the balance for sure.

Tap sample at the brewery. Deep copper color with a nice off white head. Toasty malt aroma, some nuts and spicy earthy hops. Super nutty flavors, light cocoa, mild roastiness, medium bitterness, juicy caramel malt and faint dried fruits. Refreshing, dry, long bitter finish, drinkable and good.

Bottle. Pour is amber with a beige head, good retention/some lace. Aroma of pine, caramel, toast, citrus, earth. Taste is moderately bitter, pine, toast, earth. Palate is drier, soft, oily, bitter finish. Decent enough, but not much different from Fat Tire and inferior to the old Hoptober.

Pours a clear dark amber/brown. Aroma consists of caramel, chocolate, nuts and earthy citrus. Taste is medium bitter. Palate is lively with medium body and creamy texture. Not my favorite style but well made and easy to drink. Cheers!
