COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Editor’s note: in 2006, Skinny Dip replaced Loft as the name of New Belgium’s low-alcohol, low-calorie summer seasonal (only minor changes in recipe; i.e. still approximately 4% ABV and spiced with Kaffir lime leaf).

Skinny Dip Description: New Belgium’s Skinny Dip started out as a challenge from our founder Jeff to brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert. Jeff was looking for a full-bodied, highly drinkable beer for after workouts - something a little lighter than the rest of the portfolio. Peter, a Belgian, responded: “Only in America would I be asked to brew a beer with no calories and less alcohol.” The challenge was to give the beer body and complexity not usually found in beers at the lighter end of the spectrum. The result is Skinny Dip, a full-bodied beer that happens to weigh in at a crisp 114 calories per 12-ounce serving. Cascade hops frolic with a hint of lime leaf, making Skinny Dip a bright, refreshing splash for the summer season.

Loft Description: In a category all its own, Loft delivers an uplifting zest, a taut line of hoppiness, and, from integrated wheat and barley malt, a mouthful as big as the sky. Spiced with Kaffir lime leaves.

12 oz Loft Bottle from 2002 Revival Folly Pack. Pours a clear honey color with a thin quickly dissipating white head. Aroma of cereal, cheerios to be exact, hints of citrus, and lime. Very crisp and refreshing with great carbonation. You can really taste the lime leaf. Lime leaves and cereal. Odd combination. Definitely feels like there are not enough calories. Very thin. Dry zesty finish.

12 oz bottle with 22SEP12 date stamp on it. Pours a bright clear golden with a white fluffy head. Aroma is dominated by cereal grain, a little citrus maybe from the hops, a bit of sulfur, and some linalool. Well carbed gives a nice mouthfeel. Flavor is more cereal grain, with a sweet, dry finish. Sessionable as hell. Wish it were in a can.

Pours a crisp, clear gold with white head. Aroma is a very slight malt with earthy/hoppy notes detected. Taste is an extremely light malt with slight hop character, earthy again in the finish.....not the best effort from New Belgium.

Old review from notes. Light orange color and frothy white head. Some fruit in the nose. A bit watery and lacking in overall taste, but maintains the New Belgium earthiness. Easy to drink warm weather beer, but fairly vanilla by NB standards.

This is easily the worst New Belgium. Its a good sign that this thing is retired because its skunky, moldy citrus flavor was pretty terrible. What’s worse is that it seems a direct response to a trend started by the macros. A workout beer? Really?

Originally reviewed: 9/4/09. I’ve had this beer a few times and just now realized I’ve never reviewed it. Pours a crystal clear light orange with a big frothy white head on top. Smells of sweet malts, flowers, and some slight citrusy hops. The mouth is crisp and well-carbonated. Flavor is nice and balanced with sweet malts at the forefront, and it finishes with just a touch of bitterness. This is very unoffensive and pretty good. This would be a great ’crossover’ brew for the BMC drinker.

One of my favorite beers of the summer season, between this and the IPA they have, its a tough decision every time.

On tap at the brewery. August 2009. Reviewed from notes. Pours a slightly-hazed yellow color with a light white head and not much lacing. The nose brings some really faint citrus notes. Other than that, there’s just some light grain. The taste is the same with some very mild sweetness and a bit of citrus. Light body. Drinks fine, but really is nothing to even say about this other than that it is quite plain. Serving type: on-tap Reviewed on: 10-29-2010

I drank this on tap into a pint glass...The beer pours a light clearish brown with a light white head, no head or lacing worth mentioning...The aroma is nothing, a little skunky hops...The taste is horribly boring, no taste which is worsened by a horrible feel that is so light it makes it totally undrinkable. This beer is horrible.
