Commercial Description:
Editor’s note: in 2006, Skinny Dip replaced Loft as the name of New Belgium’s low-alcohol, low-calorie summer seasonal (only minor changes in recipe; i.e. still approximately 4% ABV and spiced with Kaffir lime leaf).

Skinny Dip Description: New Belgium’s Skinny Dip started out as a challenge from our founder Jeff to brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert. Jeff was looking for a full-bodied, highly drinkable beer for after workouts - something a little lighter than the rest of the portfolio. Peter, a Belgian, responded: “Only in America would I be asked to brew a beer with no calories and less alcohol.” The challenge was to give the beer body and complexity not usually found in beers at the lighter end of the spectrum. The result is Skinny Dip, a full-bodied beer that happens to weigh in at a crisp 114 calories per 12-ounce serving. Cascade hops frolic with a hint of lime leaf, making Skinny Dip a bright, refreshing splash for the summer season.

Loft Description: In a category all its own, Loft delivers an uplifting zest, a taut line of hoppiness, and, from integrated wheat and barley malt, a mouthful as big as the sky. Spiced with Kaffir lime leaves.

12oz. bottle. Pours a nice medium golden color. Long lasting white head, very good lacing. Nice malty aroma, not much else though. A little malt up front followed by nice hop bite. Pretty good.

Bottle. Pours a copper golden color with a small white head that diminshes quickly. The aroma is a sweet malt with raisin. Decent sticky lacing on the glass. The taste is also a sweet malt and brown sugar. A decent belgian ale from New Belgium.

Hmmm, would describe as the bastard love child of a good Belgian ale and miller light. So, that leaves you with a good tasting beer that has minimal flavor, not nearly as bad as it sounds, but not good. I had no idea this was (near-beer 4.2%)light beer when I bought it, but I’m only out $1.40. If you like light beer this might be beervana, but if you like light beer you would never have found this website.

12 oz bottle. Slightly hazy golden color with bubbly white head that left a little lace. Aroma was weak grassy hops and malty cereal grain. Flavor was similarly uninspiring, but the beer tasted fresh. Finish was crisp and dry.

Earthy yeasty aroma with pungent citric kaffir lime. Subdued bisquit malts. Nicely balanced with minor hops. Kaffir lime is not as noticable as in sniff. Palate is kind of flat and uninspired.

Bottle from the brewery in Ft. Collins. Light amber with a creamy white lingering head, but here is where the positives end. This beer is light in body and light on flavor. It lacks malt, hops and that supposed lime flavor. I think anytime you brew a beer in this mold, it will suffer mightily in the ratings. It reeks of a gimick, something AB or Miller would try, but not one of my favorite breweries in America. I never want to read "figure friendly" on one of my beers. If you’re worried about your figure, go exercise, damn, brew me a beer that I can be proud of.

Copper, very slightly hazy with a large white head that is partially diminishing. Leaves frothy-egg lacing on the glass. Moderate cascade hop aroma is piney and slightly biting with an underlying caramel malt base. Moderately bitter flavor, somewhat metallic with a hay/straw finish. Pine notes prevalent in the immediate aftertaste.
