Commercial Description:
Editor’s note: in 2006, Skinny Dip replaced Loft as the name of New Belgium’s low-alcohol, low-calorie summer seasonal (only minor changes in recipe; i.e. still approximately 4% ABV and spiced with Kaffir lime leaf).

Skinny Dip Description: New Belgium’s Skinny Dip started out as a challenge from our founder Jeff to brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert. Jeff was looking for a full-bodied, highly drinkable beer for after workouts - something a little lighter than the rest of the portfolio. Peter, a Belgian, responded: “Only in America would I be asked to brew a beer with no calories and less alcohol.” The challenge was to give the beer body and complexity not usually found in beers at the lighter end of the spectrum. The result is Skinny Dip, a full-bodied beer that happens to weigh in at a crisp 114 calories per 12-ounce serving. Cascade hops frolic with a hint of lime leaf, making Skinny Dip a bright, refreshing splash for the summer season.

Loft Description: In a category all its own, Loft delivers an uplifting zest, a taut line of hoppiness, and, from integrated wheat and barley malt, a mouthful as big as the sky. Spiced with Kaffir lime leaves.

Pours golden amber with a mild head. Aroma is lots of vegetables and some malt. Flavour is very slightly hoppy with a slight malt tinge as well.

12oz bottle.. pours a muddy golden color with a crisp almost citrus aroma out the gate. Initial hit o the palate is a bitter thrust of carbination backed by a subtle punch of light hops.. Robust but not overwhelming this is a nice brew.. low cal is a plus. this light weight selection is a nice compliment to the fuller bodied NB regulars.

Has a perfectly pleasant appearance but smells and tastes like dishwashing detergent. I’m not sure if its the hops, the yeast or the spicing, but I didn’t care for this one.

Bubbly pour...a bit more robust than expected. Off white head quickly dissolves leaving some nice lacing. Moderate brown, yet clear pour. Aroma has a nice balance of malt and hops with some embedded lemon. Flavor has some nice spice up front with some hoppy flavor. Didn’t know this was a ’low calorie’ beer, but could tell this had less body than the average NB brew. That being said, comparing it to other ’low cal’ beers, its pretty darn good, but the body and lack of mouthfeel detracts when comparing it to most other micro brews...

This was an interesting brew. Wasnt bad tasting, went down nice. Didnt really know what kind of beer I was consuming and I feel like that added to my "enjoyment". Citrusy aroma mixed with some light hoppiness and a little yeast and malt thrown in there. Was a descent beer to drink on a nice hot day. And it says here it’s low calorie? A light "micro" brew beer. Sweet.

Had this bee on 4/22/2006. Aroma is a sweet malt scent backed by a mild hop scent. Color is a bright crisp gold with good carbonation and bold head. Taste is thin, dry and hoppy. Starting with a light body it goes down crisp and fizzy. Finish is a light malt flavor backed by a full bitterness and faint hop flavor. Its not totally bad but the bitterness is overpowering and it has a dry feel that makes it less refreshing then a summer brew should be. Most disappointing beer I have had from New Belgium.

12 oz bottle; BB Jan 04 08, weak nose of peanuts; clear light amber with a medium beige head; flavor is of nutty peanuts and we don’t even have any in the house and I don’t usually eat them; also a little caramel and a hint of hop bitterness. Different!

This is a great "light" bear with a slight citrus aroma. The color is a medium golden color and has a strong carbonation to it. I like this one during the summer time and pick-up a case as soon as it shows up at the store.
