COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Editor’s note: in 2006, Skinny Dip replaced Loft as the name of New Belgium’s low-alcohol, low-calorie summer seasonal (only minor changes in recipe; i.e. still approximately 4% ABV and spiced with Kaffir lime leaf).

Skinny Dip Description: New Belgium’s Skinny Dip started out as a challenge from our founder Jeff to brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert. Jeff was looking for a full-bodied, highly drinkable beer for after workouts - something a little lighter than the rest of the portfolio. Peter, a Belgian, responded: “Only in America would I be asked to brew a beer with no calories and less alcohol.” The challenge was to give the beer body and complexity not usually found in beers at the lighter end of the spectrum. The result is Skinny Dip, a full-bodied beer that happens to weigh in at a crisp 114 calories per 12-ounce serving. Cascade hops frolic with a hint of lime leaf, making Skinny Dip a bright, refreshing splash for the summer season.

Loft Description: In a category all its own, Loft delivers an uplifting zest, a taut line of hoppiness, and, from integrated wheat and barley malt, a mouthful as big as the sky. Spiced with Kaffir lime leaves.

Good beer, and definitely a full mouthful, but other than the strong hops, I found the flavor lacking. It seems they covered a watery beer with a full dose of hops.

12oz bottle, enjoyed at robotopera’s lakehouse in MI (why aren’t they sending this to OH yet? NB launch is so stingy). Date on the bottle reads 30/nov/14. Clear orange color. Finger and a half of off white head. Leaves good, thicker lace. Medium body. Smooth, kind of soft, lighter carbonation. Light slick finish. Good light spice, citrus, light herbal aromas. Moderate sweet taste, light spicy, light bitterness. Not a bad belgian session ale.

Golden amber with thin white head, disappears rapidly. Aroma of peanuts and caramel. Taste is an odd combination of incompatible spice, not very pleasant.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, best before 11/30/2014. Pours fairly crystal clear golden orange color with a 1-2 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings down the glass, with some moderate streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of grapefruit, lemon zest, lime, orange peel, toast, biscuit, light caramel, herbal, grass, light pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus hops, spice, and bready malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of grapefruit, lemon zest, lime, orange peel, toast, biscuit, light caramel, herbal, grass, light pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Light earthy/peppery bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, lemon/orange zest, lime, toast, biscuit, light caramel, herbal, grass, and light pepper on the finish for a short bit. Good balance and robustness of citrus hops, spice, and bready malt flavors; with a nice crisp hop/malt balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Flavors are definitely on the light side, but it does not feel watery. Medium carbonation and light-medium bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, and slightly dry mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is well hidden with no warming present after the finish as expected of 4.2%. Overall this is a nice and pleasant blonde ale. Well balanced citrus hop, spice, and bready malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Pours a clear golden orange. Aromas are slight: citrus, tea. A rather weak flavor profile, light bodied, blandly crisp. You get what you ask for: low on calories, low on taste.

Gold in color... Aroma of light malts, lime, citrus hops... Flavor is fairly thin, light malts with notes of lime and hops on finish... Basically, a bud light lime with slightly more body... Boring beer ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle on July 8th as Skinny Dip. Lightly sweet, over light body, some lime. Does what it sets out to do I guess.

pours golden with a frothy white head. aroma is malt and citrus. taste is that of a light beer(blah!), with slight malt and citrus notes and very light on the hops. medium body with a slight tart finish. A Belgium ale, really? I already have a slight tire growing around my waste from the good Belgium ales I have drank over my life. I see no reason to make a light style of one. Not a fan.

Onslow (1151) - Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA - JUL 6, 2014
Pour from a 12oz bottle. Clear golden brew with frothy white head. Aroma of hops, citrus. Taste is sweet malt at the start with a decent grass / citric finish. Mild and quaffable all around but more character than the vast majority of light brews (and more than many standard brews.) If I drank light beer I’d switch to this.
