Commercial Description:
Editor’s note: in 2006, Skinny Dip replaced Loft as the name of New Belgium’s low-alcohol, low-calorie summer seasonal (only minor changes in recipe; i.e. still approximately 4% ABV and spiced with Kaffir lime leaf).

Skinny Dip Description: New Belgium’s Skinny Dip started out as a challenge from our founder Jeff to brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert. Jeff was looking for a full-bodied, highly drinkable beer for after workouts - something a little lighter than the rest of the portfolio. Peter, a Belgian, responded: “Only in America would I be asked to brew a beer with no calories and less alcohol.” The challenge was to give the beer body and complexity not usually found in beers at the lighter end of the spectrum. The result is Skinny Dip, a full-bodied beer that happens to weigh in at a crisp 114 calories per 12-ounce serving. Cascade hops frolic with a hint of lime leaf, making Skinny Dip a bright, refreshing splash for the summer season.

Loft Description: In a category all its own, Loft delivers an uplifting zest, a taut line of hoppiness, and, from integrated wheat and barley malt, a mouthful as big as the sky. Spiced with Kaffir lime leaves.

Not one of my favorite summer varieties. Pours into a glass w/ a orange coppery color with little to no head. It has a somewhat citrus flavor at first sip. It leaves me wishing there was more hops present in the flavor profile.

12oz bottle
Appearance: Pours a clear golden with a nice white head and lots of lacing
Aroma: Barnyard yeast flavors
Taste: Flavors of bread & yeast.
Overall: Not a bad beer, but it is strange. NB should stick with the beers they know and are great at brewing!

Clear amber with a medium white head and plenty of lacing. Aroma of grains, citrus, coen, lime and lemongrass. Taste of mild citrus, pale malt, super light citrus. Finishes up crisp and lagery. Bland bland bland.

Golden amber with thin white head, disappears rapidly. Aroma of peanuts and caramel. Taste is an odd combination of incompatible spice, not very pleasant.

aroma is of sweet grains with with a light astringency that gives way to trademark new belgium biscuit malt. appearance is translucent gold. flavor is of diluted citrus and light pepper with a tidal wave of water following it and a brief aftertaste of more biscuit. center of palate has a light acidic bitterness that lingers briefly afterwards. palate is gushing broken dams heaving with roaring rapids.

Golden with a large white head. Strange aroma, artificial, light fruit. Flavour is thin and watery caramel.

12oz bottle. Clear, deep-golden body, lightly sparkling and topped with a medium head of white foam that leaves behind delicate sheets of lace. Aroma is dominated by lemon and a musky-yeast aroma like a pilsner. In the mouth it’s light and watery with a little fizzy carbonation. Flavor is mild with a hint of lemon, faint hops and some spiciness (black pepper?). A dry beer designed to be drank in large quantities or not at all.

Poured clear and pale amber with a minimal white head. Streaks of lacing. The aroma was lightly spiced yeast and some citrus. The flavor was a nice blend of yeast, citrus and spice. Thin mouthfeel, finished clean. Easy to drink. Totally sessionable.

Clear gold with a funky off white head. Aroma is also funky with a bit of lime. Flavor is too small but has, again, funkiness, pepper and some other stuff that doesn’t add up to enough to make this beer. Probably a decent summer time quaff. Maybe the next time I go skinny dipping I will take this beer. That might be a while.
