Very black and red mead.
Sweet yet dryish and mildly bitter. Smell has a toast meet raspberry seed preserve.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle shared thanks to Dan. Pours a clear pinkish purple color with no real head. Aroma is big berry and slight coffee. Really interesting but not as good as the imperial. Medium light body and medium carb.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
From notes. Enjoyed on September 19 at Travis’ house. Poured from a 500 mL bottle. This one is something else. The pour is a vibrant dark red/light purple color with a light purple tinted head on top that falls to a ring. The aroma is really different. There is a huge raspberry seed on the forefront, but then the coffee kind of inserts itself. It’s a weird combination of scents. The raspberry wants to dominate with its syrupy foodness, but the coffee just won’t let it take hold. The flavors are very similar. There is an excellent raspberry jam that’s broken up by the coffee, and neither flavor can really get a good balance together. The mouth feel is syrupy and thick, not quite what I’m looking for in a mead. The aftertaste is lingeringly fruity coffee and strangely sweet. This was something else, for sure.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Dark dark red/purple. Smells like a fortified red wine. Taste is dark berries with an artificial sweetness, kinda like eating the filling from a dunkin donut jelly filled. Flavors are a little too strong in the one to the point where it’s too much.

Bottle @ home. Thanks, Adam. Deep purple pour. Nice clarity. Great coffee and raspberry jam on the nose. Slight chocolate and roasted malts, too. The flavor has a nice balance of sweet honey and fruity berry to the bitter coffee and roastiness. Slight tang on the finish. Well done.

500 mL bottle supplied by StFun -- many thanks!
Opened on a partially cloudy 60°F noon while I tended to my lavender patch.
To oversized snifter, it pours a ruby-tinted dark purple; light pinkish carbonation rose and fell on top -- took roughly 4 seconds. More bubbles than the barrel aged version, that’s for sure. But the liquid still looks pretty much the same. Maybe a hair brighter.
Aromas of raspberry purée, a slight Merlot-like acidity, fir bark, and unsurprisingly, nail polish.
Tastes much the same with the addition of sweat, tart cherry juice, and American ale yeast. Clover honey, dark roast ground coffee, kiwi skins, and a mysterious medicinal note experienced by mid-palate to swallow. This is a touch fruitier than the barrel aged edition, but also very similar. I liked that with the Imperial, its flavors were a bit more subtle. Oh, yeah, and this is as watery as the BA version: the vinous quality is still deeply part of this mead; definitely gave me the impression I was drinking a Merlot or some other red wine with an undertaste of artificial sweetness and slight acidity. Coffee was harder to detect this time round, which was unfortunate. I’d have this again: it’s a decent and interesting mead after all, but I’m not sure I’d go out of my way to hunt this down.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pour out of bottle, dark purple-black pour, still pour. Aroma brought notes of big raspberry, dark chocolate, coffee, chocolate covered raspberry, nice roasty note into some honey, vanilla. Taste was a mix of honey, raspberry, vanilla into a bit of cocoa powder, roast into green espresso, finishing sweet.
