3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Location: Bottle at Max and Andy’s Fantasy Tasting, 5/1/10
Aroma: Rich nose of chocolate, roasted malts, bourbon, vanilla, and a little wood
Appearance: It pours a jet black, almost oil-like pour, with a smallish brown head
Flavor: The taste is rather rich, malty, somewhat sweet, and a bit boozy as well
Palate: This beer has a rather full body, it is thick and oily, and a had a lightly hot finish
Overall, the bourbon is there, but doesn’t completely overpower this one. I guess I wasn’t very surprised, as the regular version was rather big, so the barrel aging wasn’t going to overwhelm it, just add to it. It works well on this beer, and this beer works well as a whole. Good stuff.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
A: After getting through way too much wax, the nearly black pour into a glass gives off far too much tan head, and it sticks around forever. We had to wait for about 10 minutes to be able to take a sip. Points off for the annoyance factor.
S: Once the mountain of foam died down and I was able to sniff it, I picked up plenty of roast (not surprising given the nature of the base beer). A mild vanilla note, oak, and some alcohol.
T: The roast is again the main flavor component here, with some definite alcohol flavor, maybe a bit of bourbon and rum, and some astringent oakiness. There is a lingering bitterness as well, from the high level of roast.
M: The body on the beer itself is nice--medium in nature. The carbonation is surprisingly moderate, given the volume of head produced.
D: This was a strange beer all around. Good, but not great, and the amount of foam still confuses me quite a bit. I would have liked more spirit character and a little less of the intense roast.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours deep black with fluffy brown head, aroma is dark fruit, nuts, coffee and chocolate. Taste is nice and complex, dark fruit, nuts, coffee, chocolate, in the beginning, leading into vanilla and bourbon, with a bitter roasted ending. Very nice BA stout, subtle, but tasty.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle shared by daknole -- thanks!! Pours a roasted coffee color with a trim brown head. Smells of cream and oatmeal. Tastes of toasted malt, cocoa beans, and coffee. Really smooth and subtly flavored by the barrel. Almost chalky. Heavy on the oatmeal. Totally decent.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
2010 Bottle - Thanks Buckeyeboy!!! - Pours an opaque dk brown with a medium dk beige head...aroma at first has a wet dogginess to it, but slowly gives was to carob and cocoa, vanilla, soft oak and lt bourbon...flavour, once you get past the ridiculous carbonation, is smooth and creamy vanilla, bitter chocolate and burnt wood, a fair amount of barrel presence with a lingering bitterness...this definitely has some room for improvement...

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle at Max and Andy’s Fantasy Tasting. - see rating for regular version. Add to that extra aroumatic woodiness, bourbon, roast, chocolate really comes out. Smooth body and extra creamy. Adds even more astringency, however.
