knickskicks (763) - - APR 21, 2013
A pour of I believe the last release at a tasting. Back with a brown head. Nose is lots of barrel, bourbon, vanilla. Taste is big bourbon barrel, dark chocolate. Smooth but fairly thin-medium mouthfeel.

2009 rating from 2010 - Almost opaque black/brown with a tan head...some lacing. Sweet roast smell, some wood flavors. Taste is Smoky and ashy with lingering dry smoke on the aftertaste. Medium/full body with active carbonation. Not bad but unfortunately not as good as regular Stout Trooper.

Bottle - thanks blklab2007! Pours deep black/brown with a small brown creamy head that slowly dissipates with good lacing. Aroma is dark roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, some alcohol notes, but not really localized to bourbon. Flavor is the same with some tobacco. Bourbon present but not overpowering at all. light to medium sweet and light to medium coffee bitter, with a warming finish that is actually a bit hotter than the actual ABV. This is a pretty good beer, and it is also my first Connecticut tick.

Bottle 1119/1400. The pour is dark. The aroma is thick with bourbon. The taste is full of bourbon and drinks thick. An overall awesome beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: OCT 2, 2013 2012 release, 375 ml bottle into a 668 tulip. Bottle #238/1400. Its worth noting the new style label omits the word "Trooper" and is labeled as "Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout". This has been my longest want so I was ecstatic to get this beer. Thanks for the awesome beers Matt, Rob and company! A - Pours a pitch black body. A two finger head of dark mocha head forms and fades away quickly leaving behind thin edging. A swirl produces some modest lacing with minimal retention but a fingers worth of head does come back to life. Great alcohol legs form and stay for a while. 4/5 S - Odd and unique, just as the standard IST is. Starts off with roasted malts and cola. Notes of oak, vanilla, butterscotch, fudge, leather and black pepper. Nice balance between savory and sweet. 9/10 T - Very roasty initially. Then comes some coconut and chocolate fudge. Finally the bourbon rounds it out. Vanilla, oak, and butterscotch. I swear there is a subtle touch of Dr. Pepper in here. Its not dark fruit or red wine....its just...something borderline fruity in the background. Noticeable alcohol burn on the finish but its very pleasant if you’re a fan of drinking bourbon. Not the most balanced or well integrated flavor profile, but I can’t say I’ve tasted a beer like this. Delicious in all the wrong ways. 9/10 M - Medium to light bodied and slightly syrupy. Carbonation is way too high and seems to just jumble around the all the flavors. Rather easy drinking despite the alcohol warmth. 3/5 O - A very different BA stout with some faults. The carbonation is way too high and does not work with the flavor profile at all. There is an underlying cola quality to the aroma and flavor. But through it all I love it! Well worth the wait and personal hype. 17/20 = 4.2 --------&# 2013 release into a 668 tulip. #960/1400. Thanks Evan! Pours a deep dark black with a finger of khaki foam and decent lacing. S - Amazing notes of fudge brownie soaked in bourbon with a smooth oak, vanilla, and charred roast presence. 10/10 T - Again, bourbon soaked fudge brownie with some light roast and vanilla tannins. This is beyond smooth and the alcohol is so well hidden. Finishes clean with some lingering chocolate but its never syrupy or too much, This is honestly amazing. Very reminiscent of BBPT5 but with a touch more roast. I just can’t over how smooth this beer is and how well integrated the bourbon is over the chocolate and roast of the base beer. Mouth feel is full and coating. O - What the hell NEBCO? 2012 was a good BA stout, but quite different with a sort of coke/dr. pepper thing going on, This is just ridiculous though. Genuinely world class.

500 ml bottle poured a clear dark reddish brown nearly black with a small lasting brown head. Aromas of bourbon, oak, dark chocolate, light roastiness and light dried fruit. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of bourbon, oak, dark chocolate, light roastiness and a hint of dried fruit with a smooth lingering chocolate bourbon finish.

Bottle shared by thagr81us. Thanks Calton! The beer appears nearly black and dark brown at the crest. The beer is over-carbonated and a light beige, foamy head fills most of the glass, despite a somewhat careful pour. The aroma is unusual, with wood barrels, alcohol, and tannins outweighing roasted malt. The flavor is atypical as well, with a dominant wood presence. Roasted malt and chocolate flavors play secondary roles to barrels, bourbon, and a somewhat sharp, tannic character. Not one of my favorite barrel-aged stouts. Bottle shared by John, brown wax. Much like the original stout trooper this one has some odd flavor proponent, the finish is straight and woody like any BA stout should be.

Bottle: The aroma consists of dark chocolate, light vanilla, coconut, coffee, and a touch of bourbon. It pours a dark brown with no transparency and a one finger tan head that quickly fades to a thin film. The flavor starts with dark chocolate and a touch of dark fruits. The finish has light vanilla, roast, and a hint of bourbon. It’s medium bodied with somewhat lively and fizzy carbonation. Overall, the nose is outstanding...the flavor is very good...but the mouthfeel doesn’t fit the style.
