DL Day: Seem almost opaque except when held to direct sunlight, creamy lasting beige head and outstanding lace. The aroma has notes of smoked and black malts, some mocha and caramel too, apple and blueberry, licorice, anise, and some espresso vapours. The taste is quite sweet at first but quickly a lactose and fruity acidity dashes to the rescue. The midsection displays some chocolate and vanilla notes along with a dash of pipe tobacco which fits nicely upon the smoky finish. The mouth feel is quite sticky and soft, the alcohol is mostly hidden. I really liked this brew and wish I had chance to sample more. A must try for any stoutie.

Pitch black with a deep brown head. Very oily appearance. Heavy chocolate aroma, a bit of coffee. Earthy chocolate and sweet caramel. Very sweet and quite chewy. Light oatmeal flavour in the middle adding to the slickness of this brew. Toffee and chocolate on the finish. The sweetest of the imperial stouts in this tasting and it shows in the body which completely coated my glass. Enjoyable, but could use a bit of age.

Bottle from John, thanks. I have had this one since it was released, and just now got around to opening it. Pours out a very thick black color with a tan head. This beer is really thick, as it sticks to the glass when drank. Smell is sweet and full of coffee and chocolate. Taste is rich and full bodied, but it has a touch of smoke in it which I do not care for. Take away that smoky flavor and its a damn near perfect beer, with it, it loses some points for me. It sort of has that same smokiness that Immort Ale has, but it is a bit stronger in this one. I hope the smoke is not from me dropping cigar ashes in my glass, but I dont think it was. I did smoke a cigar with this, and it was very pleasing and went well with it, but when I went inside to finish the beer the smoky flavors started to come out in the beer, and it became tougher for me to finish. Still, a pleasure to try this one, thanks John.

Very dark brown - nearly black...dainty, tan remnants of of a head around the sides of the glass. Just by the way it looks, I can tell it is thick and oily. Roasty vanilla aroma - lots of coffee. Highly smoked flavor, mixed with coffee - black and only mildly lactose-filled sweetness. Just very good.

12 ounce bottle from Julios - Nice bottle and label, although that does make this beer fall a bit into gimmick territory (however, it did get me to dish out the seven bucks for it) - VERY thick black pour, with a small brown ring of lace - a little bit of light gets through, but not much - intense aroma of bitter coffee, black cherry, blueberry and roasted malts - oily mouthfeel, with soft carbonation - oatmeal stout creaminess, mingling with strong, espresso bitterness - anise, berries, black cherries, dried raisins, all mix with a medium sweetness that is tempered quite nicely with the roasted and bitter qualities of the beer - finishes with lingering sweetness and notes of tobacco and brown sugar - while intense and heavy, it never seems over the top - this is one of the best new imperial stouts I’ve had in quite some time - even at 7 bucks a bottle I’m sorry i didn’t buy more - for once, I’d say believe the hype.

UPDATED: JUN 30, 2008 Dense black, dark tan creamy head. Rich nose held notes of deeply roasted coffee, milk chocolate, red licorice, molasses, and lightly smoked blackberry. Similar in flavor with loads of roasted coffee, berry cream, touches of burnt chocolate. Full bodied and smooth, soft carbonation, bittersweet finish. Fantastic stuff from these guys. A bit spendy at $7 / bottle, but certainly glad I tried the one...

12 oz. bottle via trade with jjpm74 - Cool label on the bottle. This one will go on the shelf with a few others. Pours a thick black color with a large two finger thick light brown head. Nice thick lacing. Aroma is roasted malt, coffee, and chocolate. Your typical IS aroma line-up. Flavor is roasted malt and coffee with noticeable bitterness up front. Not much esters in this one. Has a slight bitter sweet palate. Medium to full body. A very nice IS. Thanks John

Pours a black color with a large dark tan frothy head. Starts with a roasted coffee ice cream aroma and a dark chocolate lingering in the background. Initital flavor suprisingly starts chocolatey moving into a coffee explosion overlaying a sweet fruit. The stickiness starts to become apparent with the bitter hops slightly noticible in the aftertaste but fades quickly when again the coffee and chocolate take in a second running. Long lasting palate. Superb lacing of the glass and small head retention. Full body and Fully enjoyable.
