Brewed in a brewery not too far away and not too long ago... Imperial Stout Trooper is a full bodied stout with a majestic blend of seven different malts and Northern Brewer hops.

Vintage 2011. Thanks to Celtic001 for this bottle! Bottle poured into a tall chalice. Pours a deep foreboding black, with a thick, lustrous mocha head. The nose is a bounty of coffee, roasted embers, bakers chocolate. The big downfall to this one though is the feel. This is an over-carbonated mess. Harsh bubbles scald the palate. Way overdone. This is a much more roasted beer than anticipated. Smoke, charred wood, some mild cocoa-like flavors. Not a lot of sweetness to help balance this one out. Meh. This one was disappointing to say the least. Not worthy of the hype for me anyways. Glad I tried it though.

Boise Imperial Stout Trooper. Dark brown color with a thin ring of beige head. Big roast aroma, mild bittersweet cocoa. There is a little sweetness, but mostly roast, some coffee bitters. Pitted fruits and dark chocolate.

From notes. Enjoyed this one over at Chris’s house on March 26 for a beer and smoked meats get together. 500 mL bottle opened by me. The pour is a thinner light black color with a thicker beige head that lingers, offering a touch of lace. The aroma is heavy licorice, light dark fruits, and a big bitter roast. It’s surprising how bitter this one is. There is a light chocolate presence toward the back, which helps with a little sweetness entering the mix. The flavors are quite similar. There isn’t any one flavor that really drowns it out, though the levels of roast and bitterness are high. It’s got a good balance with the chocolate and dark fruits. The mouth feel is nice and thick, but the carbonation is off. It’s a little too bubbly for a nice heavy stout. The aftertaste is all roasted malt and bitter licorice. There is a hint of chocolate, but it’s just a hint. This is a good one from NEBCO, I hope I get to try the barrel aged one with it one day!

I think it’s a 2011 or 12. I had high hopes for this beer but it didn’t age well. Very oxidized but probably very good fresh.
