rocbyter (669), Waterbury, Connecticut, USA Mar 25, 2007 Strong but not over powering malty nut aroma with a slight alcohol scent. Completely black with a large medium density brown head. Cascades a little when poured. Chocolate taste with a hint of coffee. Finish seems like its gonna have a harsh bite then mellows to something smoother. Creamy like a thick chocolate milk, silky but kinda light.
juiceisloose (338), Orlando, Florida, USA Sep 26, 2008 Courtesy growler. I love the bottle being a big Star Wars fan. This one came right after trying Dark Lord so it may not have been the best timing. Pours a very dark brown color almost black with a small mocha head that quickly disspates. The aroma shows dark chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, and a touch of hops. The flavor shows more chocolate and roasted coffee balanced nicely by earthy hops and a touch of smoke. Medium bodied and fairly smooth with a lot of carbonation. This one finishes with the sweet chocolate and some coffee bitterness on the aftertaste. This was a solid impy stout, and I hope I get to see this one again. Ibrew2or3 (1756), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA Sep 25, 2008 Wow, I thought I’d never even see this beer in person let alone get a chance to try it. tpd975 can make anything happen, thanks buddy. It pours deep darkness with thin brown head. The aroma seems a bit mild but does build big chocolate notes, some roastiness burnt molasses followed by some hotness in the nose. Smells mighty fine. The taste is bold yet somewhat melded together with punchy smoothness coming from dark chocolate, coffee, molasses, some caramel and yummy richness on the palate. Midway and into the finish it dries out a bit with malt roastiness and burnt malts giving up mild amounts of malt astringency. Very yummy indeed. otakuden (117), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Sep 12, 2008 My geekdom is being assaulted in so many ways from so many directions from this beer, the Imperial Stout Trooper from New England Brewing. It will be the first non-canned beer I have enjoyed from them so I am looking forward to it. So is my other self, the classic Star Wars geek. Tongue-in-cheek humor aside, New England really hasn’t disappointed me yet, though I have yet to be blown away by any of their beers, so maybe Imperial Stout Trooper will be that one.
Let us take a moment to enjoy the packaging.
Not quite black, but a very deep brown with hints of black creeping through as I set my Imperial Stout Trooper to work filling my glass. A thick cappuccino head rises to the occasion, and then slowly fades into a faint camouflage of cover for the brew below. Undercover, his nose confides to me notes of cream, bitter dark espresso and chocolate. A full body greets me and then bowls me over with an assault of dark chocolate, freshly drawn espresso, and a tinge of molasses in the finish to sweeten things up a bit. As my Imperial Stout Trooper grows familiar with his territory, he grows sweeter with a tinge of bitterness in the finish which is pleasantly lightly creamy as opposed to the typically dry finish of a stout. Rich, creamy, with tons of chocolate and espresso notes. As a soldier, my Imperial Stout Trooper has performed his duties well.
I could have fun drinking this beer just because, though thankfully it is not only a fun beer to look at, but also a damn good beer to drink. I would have no qualms with buying a bottle or two of their Imperial Stout Trooper whenever given the chance. AllAboutStout (526), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Sep 7, 2008 Pours a very dark brown, with a nice cocoa head forming on the pour. Looks good. Smell is heavily roasted malts and some molasses and cocoa. Taste is very much molasses and some more of the roasted malts. Huge, thick and wonderful on the mouthfeel.
I’m a huge fan of Bells Expedition, and that was the first beer that popped into my head that this beer resembles. It’s missing a bit in the flavor, but appearance, mouthfeel and smell is very close to the Expo.
Very well done, and very good. The_Epeeist (980), Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 5, 2008 12 oz bottle. Dark brown with a dense tan head. Nose shows layers of dark chocolate and cocoa with some molasses and coffee. Thick and sweet; how i generally prefer my stouts. Smooth, with a touch of carb to lighten. Taste is caramel, mocha and prune. Dry finish with bits of licorice and grapefruit. Very tasty.
