3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
2004 12oz Bottle, purchased at Downtown Wine & Spirits - Somerville, MA. Herbal, spicy aroma with a hint of oxidation in the background as a green, planty quality. The flavor carries a lot less oxidation and no carbonation, but it manages to stay lively and bright with fresh, herbal qualities. Warm and melded. The caramelized malts are a little lacking, but as pale fruits go in strong beer. Yummy and easily one of the best Barleywines to have held up for 8 years.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 15/20
2004 vintage. Huge thanks to tehzachatak for muling this bottle from the elusive Downtown Davis Square store which seemed to magically unearth this beer r. I have some other bottles with cracked wax and various fill lines, but this had the highest and the wax was all in tact. Speaking of wax, it is insanely brittle and a huge pain to remove. After I sliced my hands and managed to scrape all of it off of the cap I was left with a brown New England Brewing bottle cap and a piece of white/clear tape. So, 12 oz bottle into a 668 tulip.
A - Pours a clear red/purple body. A few bubbles form and a very slight khaki edge forms before popping away. Now Iím left with a still liquor like liquid. Holding it up to the light produces a lovely burnt amber body. A swirl does create a thin alcohol lacing. Looks pretty damn inviting despite not looking like a beer.
S - Raisins, and a whole lot of them!! Just gobs of raisins, caramel, and toffee. A touch of citric hops and fruit cake. Finishes with a bit of spice and a tingling alcohol. Sweet and ever so slightly savory.
T - Raisins, caramel, toffee and a bit of oxidation. Muted and tame. Finishes clean and light with no body to carry flavors through. Alcohol warmth on the end.
M - Spoiler alert: Its dead. Zero life and a body thatís barely clinging onto "medium". Drinks like a port or sherry, but lacks much of an aftertaste to help things out.
O - A long time want of mine fully met. Itís held up well for an 8 year old barleywine. Its certainly not a great beer though. The aroma is burnt raisins muddled in an expired fruit cake and the taste is surprisingly lackluster and light on the finish. This beer has some parallels with Raison Díextra, only its missing the alcohol bite and massive taste that makes that beer so great. Is this worth trading for? Not unless youíre either a die hard NEBCO-fan or you enjoy beers that are way over the hill. I wonder how close this was fresh to the new Premeditated Murder barleywine.

boozy, oily, not the best barleywine ive tasted. small white head that dissipated fairly quickly, a ton of alcohol burn, not smooth, caramely, cloying malty.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle... Poured dark amber/orange with thin ring of a head that faded quickly. Not carbonation, but great age Barleywine flavors. Little bit of booze, some doughy malts, big time caramel, dark fruits, and high end tea flavors.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
12-oz., capped and waxed like a little beast. Thanks, RiversideAK! Murky medium amber with bright caramel highlights. Headless, legaless, laceless. Big sweet caramel nose. Creamy medium body. Tons of smoke, caramel, biscuit, and graham cracker. Mild finish. The smoke is an interesting touch, but once the novelty of that wears off, itís kind of just another sticky, cloying bw.

2.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Aroma is of sherry and oak, your typical aged notes ... very tan and murky ... mouthfeel is pretty much a mess .. old dominates here, some chocolate and rum ... tasted strange, warming up doesnít really help.. i could have done without .. age 20 years? this was 5 years old and had trouble...

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottled, 2004 vintage. Poured fiery coppery-amber with no head sticking on it. The aroma opened strong with a healthy liquor-like impression.. toasted caramel, barley, and lots of alcohol over sweeter notes of vanilla and grappa.. as it breathed, it became more alluring. The flavor opened syrupy with molasses, vanilla, and dark vinous notes leading.. caramel and darker fruit supported the middle.. finished with a heavy oxidation presence and alcohol warmth.. dry and oaky all around. Heavy-bodied with very low if any carbonation present.. thick feel, but rather empty on the back.. just a little residual fruit and warmth at the end.
