Brewers Special is a robust brown ale full of malt character. The deep, bronze body awaits the discerning drinker below a substantial foamy, light tan head. As it’s name suggests, this is no ordinary Brown Ale. At 6.6% ABV this beer is a testament to the craft of the American Brewer. The noticeable strength is balanced by an impressive malt backbone from imported Maris Otter barley, the complex flavor profile comes from a combination of crystal, victory and roasted malts while the hopping rate for this ale (33 IBU’s) ensures that the malts don’t overpower but retain the upper hand while vying with the persistent alcohol to ensure a consistently pleasurable experience to the bottom of the glass. So beware, this Special Brown ale is deceptively easy drinking for its strength!

650ml bottle. Clear, chestnut colour with ruby red glimmer and average, thick, creamy, half-way lasting, moderately lacing, off-white to beige head. Nuttily malty aroma, hints of hazelnut, walnut, cautious spici- and sweetness also from the nutty scale of flavours, a nougat touch. Taste is minimally sweet nuttily malty, dry hoppy overtones with a minimally grassy and leafy touch, unripe hazelnut. So-so.

22oz bomber, I thought this was quite decent--little hoppy for a brown, but that is the trend now. Smooth, with just a little bite on the backend from the booze. Will try more from New English.

(En fût à la brasserie): Douce mélasse, sablé de torréfaction et miettes de pain grillé. Ça respire le brown malt à plein nez. La texture est amicale à la buvabilité d’envergure, solide brown ale.

July 3rd, 2013 - This brown ale from New English Brewing has a great scent, but less in the flavor. The aroma is boozy and sweet smelling, filled with raisins and deep malt and a little chocolate and fig, but the taste is surprisingly empty. There’s some malts and a tuned balance with the sugars, and the heavy body is pleasant. But the overall taste is generic, and falls in line with many brown ales before it.
