COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewers Special is a robust brown ale full of malt character. The deep, bronze body awaits the discerning drinker below a substantial foamy, light tan head. As itís name suggests, this is no ordinary Brown Ale. At 6.6% ABV this beer is a testament to the craft of the American Brewer. The noticeable strength is balanced by an impressive malt backbone from imported Maris Otter barley, the complex flavor profile comes from a combination of crystal, victory and roasted malts while the hopping rate for this ale (33 IBUís) ensures that the malts donít overpower but retain the upper hand while vying with the persistent alcohol to ensure a consistently pleasurable experience to the bottom of the glass. So beware, this Special Brown ale is deceptively easy drinking for its strength!

Type: Cask Glass: 0.5L (16.9 oz.) glass From: Tiger! Tiger! in North Park (San Diego), Calif. Price: $3.00 (w/ progressive Friday) Purchased: Feb. 28, 2014 Consumed: Feb. 28, 2014 Misc.: N/A Poured a dark brown color with three fingers of wet and foamy khaki tan head. Lots of uneven foamy lacing along the sides. Great retention. Had to work for the smell, but got caramel, toffee, some booziness, light chocolate, unfiltered and a bit lighter version of Guinness. Tasted much better than the smell. Got caramel, toffee, unfiltered, chocolate, nutty and wet bitter booziness. Full body. Creamy texture. Flat-to-soft carbonation. Longer finish. Not a bad beer overall. Iím still new to casks, but this was decent.

Old rating copied from BA. On tap at 5 Points. The pour is a slightly muddy brown color with a quickly vanishing tan head. The nose has a bit of olive to it along with a fair amount of nuttiness. Decent toasty and sweet toffee malt aromas, along with a touch of chocolate. The flavor is certainly quite nutty, including some nutshell kind of flavor in there thatís a bit off-putting. A bit bitter for the style and the sweet malts do not really come through that much.

650 ml bottle from Sprouts market. Pours a chestnut brown color with a small beige head that slowly recedes to a film. The aroma is mild with roasted grains and brown sugar. The flavor features more roasted grains, earthy hops, rock candy, bitter walnuts and filberts. The palate is silky smooth with soft carbonation. Finishes long, dry and lightly bitter-sweet. Overall: This was quite a pleasant surprise, very nice brown ale.

Bottle. Pours with a clear chestnut brown hued body with a lofty, creamy, off-white head that lasts and leaves good lace. Aromas are nutty, earthy, light chocolate, spicy hops, bready and biscuity. Flavors are of toffee, a touch of diacetyl, malty, chocolate, nutty, cereal, caramel with a medium to medium-light bitterness. Medium carbonation. Decently dry, medium to medium-light bodied.

Bomber from Beverages 4 Less in Santee, CA. Fred covers the area! Pours dark ruddy copper with a creamy beige head. Aroma is chocolate, sort of like Horlickís. Med body. The flavor makes me think of old timey chocolate flavored breakfast drink/food. Itís malty sweet, with chocolate, but thereís enough bitter to make it on the bitter side. Might be one of the best brown ales. Having said that, I ask why there should be brown ales? Likely to make us grateful for the imperial and sour ales. Having said that, this might be really cool if it was amped up to imperial status.

Really underwhelming. If you want something simple to complement your burger, itís not bad at all. But really a boring beer.
