Cracked this open to share with dear ol’ dad on Father’s Day. Belgian Red pours a glimmering ruby with a touch of haze. A fizzy two finger champagne like head forms on the pour and fizzles down to a ring after a couple minutes. Small patchy lacing slides down the flute back into the body after each drink. A delicious looking dessert beer!
When I stick my nose in the glass it fills with all kinds of cherry. Cherry pie filling, tart cherries, Bing cherries, and maraschino cherries are all present and accounted for. Extremely mouthwatering, bold and to the point. An excellent rich aroma coming from an excellent beer.
Everything the nose suggested the flavor delivers. The immense cherry flavors start with a quick flash of tartness followed by the sweetened cherry pie filling and Bing cherries mid-palate. Finishes with another flash of the slightly tart cherries. All this cherry flavor really comes together to create something special.
Body is on the fuller side of medium with a bit of stick. Although the body is on the fuller side it moves through nicely and has a great smoothness.
This is a beer to be savored. The intense cherry flavors keep this from being guzzled but it is one easy beer to put away.
New Glarus’s fruit beers stand a top a line up full of gems. The Belgian Red is all at once tart, tangy, and sweet with an incredible depth of flavor. You will have a hard time finding any other fruit beer that can come close to this one, flavor-wise.
6/16/08 mcjay (302), Neenah, Wisconsin, USA Jan 18, 2009 Red color with a thin fizzy head. Nothing but cherries with a very sweet taste and a slightly tart finish. zer0crew (60), Duluth, Minnesota, USA Jan 14, 2009 Bottle. Pours a dark ruby red with almost no head. A little bit fizzy, but not like pop or champagne. Definite aroma of cherries. Great cherry flavor and mouth feel. Overall a great brew, would recommend to anyone, even if they’re not a "beer person". Good for beer-sissy’s and girlfriends. fiver29 (703), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Jan 10, 2009 Bottle pours dark red color with a head that looks tan colored. Aroma is cherry candy. Has a medium mouthfeel with a lot of carbonation. Flavor is sweet cherry and not much else. This reminds me of a cherry candy I used to eat when I was a kid. That’s what the flavor is to me. Overall its what I expected it to be. fredandboboflo (1395), East Setauket, New York, USA Jan 9, 2009 Bottle. Aroma of sweet cherries (but naturally sweet cherries, not artificially sugary or anything). Flavor adds in some sour cherry notes, but is still predominantly sweet, and certainly all about the cherry. Though tasty, this one didn’t give me near the cherrigasm that Raspberry Tart did for its namesake fruit, and was more a pleasant drink than particularly memorable. Slipstream (734), USA Jan 8, 2009 I guess this is a beer, judging by the ingredieants, but my tastebuds thinks it is a cider. Amber red pour with a little seafoam on top. Sharp, sour, cherry wine aroma. This is rich in juice and wine flavors, and would make an excellent spring or summer after dinner drink. It is similar to NG Raspberry Tart, but not quite as much fun. Thanks again to Adrian for sharing his stash of fine brews. Strykzone (1459), Wood River, Illinois, USA Jan 1, 2009 Enjoyed on New Years Eve ’08. Pour is a funky red with an aroma full of cherry and rhubarb. Very sweet. Flavor is much the same. This is very fizzy with a soda pop feel. Nice, though. This is one I had heard so much about that the hype was bigger than the beer.
