kepano (239), Meudon, France Mar 20, 2008 Opening a New Glarus brew always produces a moment of excitement in me – particularly for specimens of such renown. As a raspberry enthusiast, I tend to cast an exigent eye on the fruit’s use. Consequently, New Glarus’ Raspberry Tart left me slightly underwhelmed, I felt the medium of beer wasn’t fully explored. However, its cherry-saturated counterpart, the Belgian Red, held less demanding expectations yet exceeded even those I had set for the former. The pour produced an extravagant red mire accented of magenta. Pink fizz churned from the murk. Painted thick, the nose is equally rich, exuding expansive cherry aromas. The fruit is present but variegated, sometimes showing a waxy Twizzler-like sweetness, other times a genuine red cherry sourness. The nostalgic aroma of Sweet Tarts is unmistakable and supplemented by marshmallow and Smarties (of the American variety). Hints of brown sugar, spice and Cherry Coke add a distinctive flair. The flavor further underscores Sweet Tarts and pleasantly sour cherries. The beer is sweet but neither syrupy nor sugary, it strikes a good balance between fruit and beer. Rich tonalities of vanilla, butter and almond paste hit the right notes, added to the enjoyable fizziness. The long sticky sour aftertaste hints at a subtle oaking. All in all, a beautiful brew and truly a fine example of New Glarus’ craft. (22/04/07)
hayduke (1471), Eureka, California, USA Jul 1, 2009 From a 750 ml bottle this poured a very rich and dark cherry head with almost no head. The nose is very strongly cherries and some hard to identify spices. Very lively mouthfeel. Flavor is sweet with the cherries dominating. This is a remarkable fruit beer. tekhna (66), New York, USA Jun 27, 2009 Cherries and a whole lot more cherries! Special trip through superior WI after breaking my foot to pick it up. I don’t pick up much of the oak, but this is a great beer. Even if I don’t care for fruit beers. Usually taste fake. This has more of a taste of cherry butter rather than a cherry itself. joshpiledean (213), Ames, Iowa, USA Jun 26, 2009 Every once in a while, you come across a beer that changes the way you think about beer.
This is one of those beers. slitcher (47), Freeport, Illinois, USA Jun 23, 2009 Pours a hazy redish brown with a thin head. Fresh cherries on the nose along with some spice. Sour cherries on the pallet with a sweet malt backbone and cinnamon in the finish. A great dessert beer. GranvilleTim (289), Granville, Illinois, USA Jun 22, 2009 Dark red pour with white head with a red tinge to it. Sweet, yet tart aroma of cherries. The cherry flavor is like taking a bite of cherry pie- flavorful, fresh, wanting more. There is a slight tartness just at the end. I must remember to buy more the next time in Beloit., a 200 mile round trip is worth it. 502Flavors (506), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Jun 20, 2009 &50 2008 vintage (1 year old). Great fruitty cherry profile on the nose. A bit of a muddy red pour (even when yeast was settled). Sweet with just a slight bit of tartness -- a bit bitter due to the hops. A bit out of balanced with the bittersweatness. The hops are n attempt to rebound the sweetness. Just a bit too sweet. MEdium body with perfect carbonation. Overall: too sweet to take down a whole 750, glad I shared this one. I can;t imagine drinking more than 6 ounces of this as a dessert beer. If you want to know a summary of this beer: your kid couldn’t tell the difference between this and his/her juice box. boomer0813 (29), denton, Texas, USA Jun 18, 2009 Bottle thanks to thirdeye11. It had a dark red cherry color w/ very little head. Aroma was of cinnamon, black cherry, and grenadine. Flavor was tart with black cherry, grenadine, and cinnamon. Not a fan of this beer! Swalden28 (1257), McKinney, Texas, USA Jun 16, 2009 Bottle thanks to thirdeye11. Pours a hazy/cloudy dark red, no real head. Aroma is GREAT, full of cherry and malt, some acidic. Flavor of cherry, malty, tasted just like a liquefied Mrs. Bairds cherry pie. Mouthfeel is smooth, medium body with crisp carbonation. Overall, GREAT SHIT!!
