3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
aroma is well balanced dead chocolate and near metallic crack, then herbal grass cuttings and other savory fare. pour is opaque with airy soap suds head, lack of density and messy legs. flavor is initial fudgey roast with expected hop twinge to follow. hops begin as citrus then fruits begin to burst, hints of pine and rounder herbal note with mint at forefront. bitter roast closes. what a balance!

Aroma is far and away the best aspect of this beer. Sweet, citrus, and resin are the dominant hop aromas. Itís a thin dark brew, with a short lasting white head. Itís got some decent dark caramel and plumb flavors in there, but a very light body. Thatís where this beer is lacking most. Itís just too thin and fizzy for me.
Overall I wonít be drinking much of this. Itís a decent IPA but just lacks the dark malt characteristics Iím looking for, and I canít overlook the lack of body.

8/10/12. 12oz bottle from cbfobes! Dark brown pour with a nice khaki head that lasts. Big citrus, dank, and fruity aroma with hints of chocolate. Nice citrus and hoppy flavor as well with lingering milk chocolate and a hint of roast. Delish.

Poured into a pint glass.
4.5 A: Black color. Two fingers of frothy tan head. Retention is good and glass covering lacing is left.
4.0 S: Herbal and earthy hoppiness. Dry roastiness almost like a schwarzbier with a balancing caramel sweetness. Molasses and brown sugar to round things out.
4.0 T: Easily one of the better black IPAs out there. I think the fact that it isnít super citrusy is why this is so. Moderate roastiness. Caramel and molasses. Herbal and earthy hoppiness. Quite good.
4.0 M: Lighter medium to medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Crisp and reasonably creamy.
4.0 D: Solid all around, this is not something I usually say about a black ipa.

12oz bottle purchased at Pick ní Save outside of Milwaukee. Pour is black with almost no head. This beer reminds me a lot of another Wisconsin favorite - Sprecher Black Bavarian. The fantastic mix of chocolate and toasty malt blends with the sharp bitterness and piney character of a top-notch IPA. This beer does really shows off the potential of black IPA by combining the best of both worlds in a mix that is better than either beer separately. Very well done.

Big thanks to Justin for this one.
Pours dark mahogany with some copper hints around the edges under a big creamy beige head that leaves nice lacing.
Aroma is fantastic. Tons of citrus - oranges, pineapples and white grapefruit, not to mention some pine hints. The black roasted malts are subtle but noticeable.
Taste doesnít quite bring the citrus like the aroma with the initial taste having some oranges but there are equal parts chocolate malts and roasted notes. Finish is lightly bitter.
Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with strong carbonation.
Another excellent brew from New Glarus, a very balanced hoppy black ale in a style where subtlety and balance are not often appreciated.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours dark red with a large tan head. Smells of grapefruit and caramelized or candied fruits. Taste is bitter with hints of sweetness. Medium-bodied with a slick texture and and mild mouth-carbonation, New Glarus Black Top finishes with some bitterness.

12oz bottle from Three Cellars. Pours dark brown with light tan head. Aromas of piney and earthy hops, roasted malts, and some chocolate. Flavors of pine, hop bitterness, light citrus, chocolate, and some roast. Very well balanced which is rare for this style. Expected nothing less from New Glarus.
