COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We invite you to discover this newest beer style Black IPA. Political debate rages over the origins of this jet black beer as both coasts feel they deserve credit. Our Black Top is a pleasant road connecting Villages and Communities statewide on a ride of Black IPA discovery. Expect this beer to pour a hop forward jet black glass brimming with aromatic bitterness. Brewmaster Dan skillfully weaves molasses and chocolate malt undertones with a soaring rush of clean citrus and pine hop notes, to deliver a drinkable Black IPA. Savor Black Top, like Wisconsin’s miles of licorice ribbons of ink that meander through armies of corn and bovine mowed fields. Enjoy the journey on a road less traveled.

Thanks to Terminus for picking this fine black IPA up for me. Pours dark brown with a crimson hue and a good sized tan head. The aroma has tropical hops, funk, spice, citrus, lightly toasted malt and modest sweetness. It has a medium body that is lush and smooth with minor semi-soft carbonation. The flavor begins with smooth toasty malt, light chocolate, hoppiness of spice, tropical fruits, grapefruit and pine. The finish is on the dry side and a bit earthy. Nice beer. If I was blindfolded I think I would have thought this was a normal IPA and not a black IPA.

Bottle, 06/25/2012. Nice deep brown pour, maroon highlights, fine lacing. Hoppy grapefruit aroma cut with pine and resin, underneath is roasted malts and chocolate, molasses. In the taste, piney hops, tongue tingling, burnt roast bitterness. Light medium body, high carbonation. Tasty for sure, my taste buds are still tingling.

Awesome pine hop scent with a hint of fruit. Taste is a really blend of malt and hops, has a nice bitter chocolate taste. A very nice black IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

bottle purchased at Woodmans madison, wi june 5th-pours deep brown with a lite tan head that was fizzy around the rim of the glass. nose is bitter hops (pine, grapefruit, lite leafy notes), chocolate, roast, lite menthol aspect-flavors are big chocolate, pine, lite resin yet not overly bitter-somwehat sweet. may have a bit of age on it however, its not fallen too far from fresh. needs more hop presence to be a true contender in this style. however, its a very well made beer with a clean ferment. would like to try this fresh on tap when it comes out again.

Pine aroma, nice attractive balck with frothy creamy off white head. Looks like a stout. Taste is pleasantly bitter, chocolate malts, bread. A great black IPA.

Bottled. Very dark chestnut in color that would look darn near black in low light. Head is very large, frothy, off-white and mostly lasting. Bright spruce aroma with light biscuit, leather and white pepper. Moderately bitter with a slightly sweet citrus peel highlight. Finish has a lot of pumpernickel bread on top of light nuttiness and plum. The hop aroma definitely tapers off quickly allowing some light roast to show. Quite interesting - the flavor profile takes you on a nice ride from hop forward IPA with brief stops at English pale ale, old ale, porter and more.

12 oz bottle courtesy of Zach. Thanks. Pours a nearly opaque black color with a small beige head that soon recedes to a film. The aroma is bold with mixed citrus, particularly oranges and grapefruit, and a bit of pine. The flavor is hops forward with bitter grapefruit nicely backed up by smooth creamy chocolate and a bit of roasted barley. The palate is creamy, thick and almost chewy, the carbonation is soft. Finishes medium in duration and dry. Overall: This way exceeded my expectations, nice brew.

Solid citrus and pine hops on aroma. Some slight malt on nose, slightly sweet roast. Pretty black brown dark red when held up to the light. Taste is thoroughly pine hops with spots of citrus brightness coming through. Gentle malt roast is expressed side by side with hops with some elegance. Not too heavy handed for a black ipa. very good.

Craft Brewers Conference 2012 - Dark black in color, clear with a thin head. Nice dark malt and hops forward aroma. Dark roasty malt flavor some light licorice lingers in the finish.
