3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle brought back from the Medici retreat. Pours clear, mahogany brown, frothy khaki head with lacing. Nose of pine, cocoa, coffee, hazelnut, biscuits, cola and citrus notes. Really nice. On the palate, chocolate, caramel malts, nuts, earth, yeast, citrus hop bitterness on the finish. Not too resinous as many black IPA can be. Med to light bodied. Really solid sessionable black IPA

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
This one poured a medium brown color with a beige head. Aroma was mostlygrasst and citrusy hops with a small note of roast. Flavor was more on the roasted side, yet still mainly citrusy hops. One of the better black ipas Iíve had.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
A steady pour into my New Belgium globe glass produces a three finger-thick, pale brown tinged, tan colored head; the head subsides with a creamy texture, and quite a bit of loft. The beer is a concentrated brown color, that isnít quite black; it shows a clear, dark red-plum hue when held up to the light. The aroma has a pungent, sweet, ripe citrus character to it up front that reminds me of peak season tangerines. Supporting notes of guava, lychee, and canned mandarin oranges add to the expressive hop fruit character. There is an earthy dark malt character here that is noticeable at times underneath the dominant hop character; some light char, perhaps a touch of cold dark-roast coffee, as well as a toasted whole grain character, and a bit of burnt grain husk character.
Lots of dry citrus character up front has a bit of an edge to it, the hops get a bit more floral and tropical fruit like towards the finish, but the final finish has an herbal citrusy character that is a bit like essential citrus oil mingled with tropical fruit essence. The dark / roast malt plays a supporting role here, it is quite smooth, but provides a bit of a burnt edge, a touch of cold coffee in the finish, some charred grain, and even a bit of roasted / burnt wood character. The hop flavor has a bit more of an herbal edge to it than in the nose, it is still mostly fruit driven, but there are light notes of pine sap, some menthol character, and a general green herbal character that lingers on the palate along with a bitter hop character; the bitterness is also accentuated by the roasted malt. The body of this beer is quite light, extremely quaffable, without being watery though, as there is just a touch of viscosity to the brew.
This is clearly a brew meant for knocking back a couple pints. The beer is quite tasty, though I think I prefer the juiciness of the aroma a bit more than the flavor; heresy perhaps, but the body / malt is almost a bit too light to fully be able to support the hop character in the flavor department.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Draft at New Glarus. Tamarind color, offwhite head. Aroma is very piney, and also shows a healthy dose of molasses. Taste: molasses, chocolate, pine, big bitterness throughout. Thick, creamy body, average carbonation, long bitter finish.

Kind of a mix of a porter and IPA. I thought it was very good and enjoyable. Nice hop bitterness mixed with some chocolate, vanilla and coffee notes.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Black, clear with red-plum hue. Light head receding quick to a ring and light lace.
Very aromatic with nice fresh tropical fruits.
Very smooth with medium body, lots of good hop refined mellow presence.Kind of a citrus/pine bitter. Nose and mouthfull of hops. Subtle roast with mild smooth chocolate. Malts come across more of a dark caramel. Tasting this blind you may not know its black although it does have a roasty edge maybe coffee possibly. Its so smooth and hoppy that you dont notice the roast much at all.

Cheers to a nod to sanity and balance.
The cirtusy and grassy nose hint at a hop dominated beer, as an IPA ought to be of course, but taking a sip, the balance really shines through. The most notable quality is the dance between resinous hop notes, and dark caramel and chocolate malts on the finish.
This is bitter and sweet, refreshing and satiating all at the same time.
Exactly what I was looking for on an unusually chilly summer afternoon in central VA
