3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
From bottle. Pours deep brown, not quite as black as a porter or stout with medium cream head. First whiff I got a little bit of banana followed by pine, then the roast notes like a summer citrus coffee blend. Taste starts roast and malt and quickly changes to spice then bitterness. A little too much bitter for my liking but I enjoy this nonetheless. Medium bodied with lots of carbonation. I find myself drinking these on cold nights when I can't make up my mind between an IPA or stout. Nice beer, but I actually prefer blending a good stout and Pale ale separately like with Yin and Yang from Evil Twin.

"the hoppy stuff has been the only chink in the new glarus armor. nothing bad, but definitely not standouts like the fruit beers...or the wheats...or the barleywines...or the lagers :) this ended up being a very nice, well-done session ale. lighter in all aspects than the majority of black ipas i;ve had, but very pleaseant and well balanced at the same time. reminded me of the hop and malt profile of odell mnt standard, and awesome black ipa...just a ton lighter. easy drinking and refreshing, though. thanks Lou, for the liver damage!"

Dark brown pour, tan head. Nose is piney, roasted malts, hop resin, slight veggies. Taste is pine, a touch of coffee, roasted malts. Creamy mouthfeel with a dry bitter finish.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
On draft at the brewery. Aroma of fresh, piney, leafy and lightly fruity hop, some background caramel sweetness and toasted, dark bread, some faint cocoa as well and slight coffee tones. Rather complex, all in all. Clear dark brown in color, head is very fine, slight and lasting. Flavor profile is likewise full of piney, fresh hops, darkly toasted malts, somewhat husky grains and chocolate, finish is all hop bitterness and lingering, leafy, piney flavor. Slightly prickly mouthfeel, lightly resinous with a medium body. Good, for sure, but not what I would call an outstanding example of the style.

I drank this on tap at the brewery in New Glarus. It could have tasted awful but doesn't matter when you're in heaven. Love the hops.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Cellared and shared 12 oz. bottles poured to snifters, showing a black/brown color, with a touch of amber highlighting at the stem, light tan froth to bubbly film, and spotty lacing. The nose was roasted, wood, molasses, and mocha notes. Medium bodied, the taste offered the same notes, with a bit of creaminess to the mouthfeel, but a diminished, citrus & pine bitterness that still retained some dryness for the finish. Enjoyable, but will have to try fresh when up in WI..

3.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Highly carbonated and pours nearly black with a thick and rich tan head. Flavor is somewhat muted at first with burnt toast and dark chocolate flavors followed by a nice dry finish that brings out some of those chocolate flavors a bit more. This might benefit from drinking a few degrees warmer than your average IPA. I don’t know that this would be my go-to style, but it’s well done. Would drink again.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Very interesting and tasteful. Black pour with some ruby highlights. Soft heat. Aroma of molasses and caramel. Taste is a smooth blend of caramel malt, cocoa, molasses and finishes with a pine hops bite.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
One of my first ever black IPAs. Molasses, cocoa, and bread on the nose, following onto the palate. Finishes with an interesting pine/grass note to give this a nice backbone.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours a dark brown with a medium sized, light tan head that doesn’t last all that long. The aroma gives you a strong citrus impression, with lots of grapefruit and pine. It has a malty balance of chocolate, some licorice, and light coffee as well. The taste has a heavy hoppy bitterness to it. Lots of pine, with milder grapefruit and chocolate. I still get hints of licorice. Aftertaste is short, with pine and some coffee. Medium bodied, lots of lively carbonation, with a very hoppy texture. I enjoyed this. Its a very good representative of this style.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
[Bottle] Pours a very dark shade of brown with a rocky brown head. Nose is more malt based than expected. The taste is of piney hops, chocolate malts and grains. Moderately bitter. A lighter black IPA, but much more sesionable as well. Tasting notes from 2012.
