COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We invite you to discover this newest beer style Black IPA. Political debate rages over the origins of this jet black beer as both coasts feel they deserve credit. Our Black Top is a pleasant road connecting Villages and Communities statewide on a ride of Black IPA discovery. Expect this beer to pour a hop forward jet black glass brimming with aromatic bitterness. Brewmaster Dan skillfully weaves molasses and chocolate malt undertones with a soaring rush of clean citrus and pine hop notes, to deliver a drinkable Black IPA. Savor Black Top, like Wisconsin’s miles of licorice ribbons of ink that meander through armies of corn and bovine mowed fields. Enjoy the journey on a road less traveled.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass. Cocoa brown in appearance with ruby edges and a strong off-white cap that leaves a few sheets of lace down the sides of the glass. The aroma bursts out of the glass with roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, and grapefruit citrus notes. Each sip starts with a dark, unsweetened chocolate flavor, some coffee, and a generous amount of roasted malt. It is moderately dry from the start. Later on, the sip turns juicy when a strong grapefruit hop presence comes through. The finish is fairly bitter, with enough hops to make me forget all about the dark roasted beginning. There is a gentle stickiness to each sip. A creamy carbonation retains enough aggressiveness to wash my tongue clean after each sip. The body is right in the middle of the spectrum. I definitely enjoy black IPA’s, and this is a well made example of the style. Easily drinkable and something I would definitely have again.

bottle. Near black with one finger head. Malty base with very nice citrus hops that punch through. For the style, it’s quite excellent with solid flavor backbone.

ARH (615) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JAN 5, 2015
On tap, poured into a sampler glass. It’s rather citrusy (a bit unexpected for a black IPA) and grassy, with only a slight roasted note. Later, toffee starts to dominate and a light coffee and bread crust emerge to join the citrus and grass. It’s a deep and dark, but clear mahogany color, with a very light, near-white, tan, dense head that leaves an abundant dense lace and retains a webbed surface and medium ring. The taste is a medium high bitter and medium sweet. The beer is a crisp beer, with a light fizz carbonation, an oily and a bit sticky texture, and a medium full body. There are burnt notes on the palate along with molasses, toast, raisin sweetness, and there’s bitter rind and licorice at the finish. The aftertaste is dry with a bread crust flavor.

Taste is bitter and slightly fruity with roasted malts, burnt caramel, grapefruit juice, unripe mango, dark roast coffee, freshly cut grass, pine needles, salty liquorice hard candy, moist soil, kumquats and lemon zest. Mouthfeel is crisp, dry, astringent and light to medium bodied. 12fl oz bottle poured into a Samuel Adams Perfect Pint. Very dark brown with two fingers off white head. Aroma is subtle candy and piney hops. Flavor is basically the same. The hops flavor intensifies for the duration of the long finish. A mellow good-tasting brew. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle: Deep brown, chestnut body. Translucent at the edges only with a frothy khaki foam that plumps up nicely. Aroma of citrus & grapefruit peel, lightly bitter pines, & a deep undercurrent of semi-bitter roasted malts with a hint of dark chocolate sweetness creeping in the back. Maybe some very faint coffee grounds, too. Hint of char. Flavor has a nice balance of the roasted malts, mild ashiness, & burnt cacao bean blending with overtones of pine, grapefruit pith, & bitter citrus rind. Slight balance of sweetness on the back-end from the dark malts. Never swings too far one way, though. Balanced, albeit a touch mild overall. Still a nice, easy drink for the style, though. Not bad.

"the hoppy stuff has been the only chink in the new glarus armor. nothing bad, but definitely not standouts like the fruit beers...or the wheats...or the barleywines...or the lagers :) this ended up being a very nice, well-done session ale. lighter in all aspects than the majority of black ipas i;ve had, but very pleaseant and well balanced at the same time. reminded me of the hop and malt profile of odell mnt standard, and awesome black ipa...just a ton lighter. easy drinking and refreshing, though. thanks Lou, for the liver damage!"
