COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We invite you to discover this newest beer style Black IPA. Political debate rages over the origins of this jet black beer as both coasts feel they deserve credit. Our Black Top is a pleasant road connecting Villages and Communities statewide on a ride of Black IPA discovery. Expect this beer to pour a hop forward jet black glass brimming with aromatic bitterness. Brewmaster Dan skillfully weaves molasses and chocolate malt undertones with a soaring rush of clean citrus and pine hop notes, to deliver a drinkable Black IPA. Savor Black Top, like Wisconsin’s miles of licorice ribbons of ink that meander through armies of corn and bovine mowed fields. Enjoy the journey on a road less traveled.

Bottled. Poured medium-deep brown with garnet highlights and a creamy, well-retained beige head.. looked great in the glass! The aroma picked up pine, grapefruit, and some floral hoppage over biscuit and chocolatey malts.. the hops were fresh, vibrant, and enjoyable. The flavor found spicy and citrusy bitterness over mostly chocolate malt.. touches of vanilla down there too.. just a hair astringent in the end, but otherwise very tasty. Medium-bodied with moderate carbonation on the palate.. balance was very good.. I’ll drink more of these.

12oz bottle courtesy of GhostFace. It pours up brown with clear amber edges and a tan head that leaves behind light spotty lacing. The aroma offers up a pleasing rich load of pine hops and dank to spicy hops mixing with dark roasted malts. The taste is very similar where the hops take the flavor lead with a blending of dank to spicy hops to resiny pine hop goodness. Well behind the hops are murmurs of dark roasted malts and faint chocolate malts that grow a tad and then linger into the finish. Darn tasty, this.

12 oz bottle. (Kwik Trip) Lake Mills, WI.
Dark reddish brown colour with a small tan head. Grassy and fruity hops, liquorice, mild roasted malt and mild bitterness in a delicious aroma. Very balanced. The flavour is a bit more leaning to a porter and the aroma to an IPA. Roasted malt, bitterness, berries and grassy hops in the flavour. Nice and tasty.

On tap @ the Über Tap Room in the Wisconsin Cheese Shop, Milwaukee. Very hazy medium brown, thick tan head. Light guava, light roast, a milder BIPA. Nice though.

12 oz. bottle as a local trade bonus. Pours an initially hazy cola brown that clears up, with a small tan head. Aroma of citrusy, earthy hops, toasty, roasty, and chocolate malts, pine, and herbs. The flavor follows the same tack, with chocolate, roast, earth, pine resin, citrus, and earth. A little metallic note, too. Light-medium bodied, with a fruity mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Nice BIPA.

Pours dark brown with a tan head. Smells of resiny hops, some citrussy hints, some roasted malt. Tastes sticky resiny pine with some bitter citrus and a spicy bite. As the beer warms, some roasty elements develop.

12 oz. bottle, bonus’d to me by ekoerper (thanks Ed), pours a deep dark brown / black with a medium foamy beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, spruce trees, and citrus and piney hops. Flavour brings out caramel and roasted malts upfront, a bit of chocolate, and a solid but slightly underwhelming citrus hop backing. Well-balanced, though perhaps slightly weak on the hop profile, or maybe I’ve become jaded by these over-the-top black IPAs - it seems like more of a hoppy brown ale. Whatever it is, it’s well-constructed and highly drinkable. Great stuff.

12oz bottle, big thanks to beerpig317! Code on bottle is 1112 06:12 . Very dark brown / red color. Appears near black. Thin tan head, some ropes of lace. Medium-plus body. Smooth, lighter, lightly soft carbonation. Kind of a more full, thicker body. Good chocolate, balanced licorice, light coffee notes. Some citrus and piney hop. Nice cocoa aftertaste. Moderate sweet taste, light to moderate bitter. Good aroma, but not as crisp or assertive as other examples. A little soft, but still enjoyable.

Bottle:   Root beer in color, moderate to large sandy head, nice lacing.   Seems a shade lighter than others.   Soft roasted malts, also soft citrusy/pithy hop on the nose.   Pale roasted malts, slight pith on the tongue.   Seems a very light Black IPA.   Seems more like a Black Pale Ale to me.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Clean finish, but not bitter, not terribly roasty either.   Its like its starts out (aroma) as a Black IPA, but quickly seems to be lesser than that.   If you want something very roasty, this aint it.   If you want something very hoppy, this is not it either.   If you want a lighter example of the style this will be the one you want.

Pour out of 12 oz bottle, dark brownish black pour with thin off white almost tan head, aroma brought notes of slight mineral, grass, roast, some earthy and pine notes but mixing well with some cocoa, coffee notes, very interesting but I wonder how old this bottle is. Taste is some grass, slight soapy/floral/mineral notes, touch of cocoa powder, hints of earthy grain, some touch of roast and coffee, finishing fairly bitter, slight dryness as well.
