1 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 2/20
UPDATED: JUL 16, 2009 Nope, sorry guys, but this is not a dark wheat. Had it on tap in downtown New Glarus. Tastes like a Schwarzbier, looks like one too. Good beer, wrong cagegory. Lacks any Weizenbier characteristics whatsoever - screams overblown American micro. C´mon guys, have you never been to Munich to drink real dark wheats like Schneider Weissbier? All these brewers have to do is pump up the volume (color, bitterness, etc.) and up go the ratings.

"wow...i can barely tell from the look, nose, or flavor, that this is indeed a wheat beer. Definitely the biggest, chewiest wheat I’ve ever had, and better than any other Dunkel Weizen or any other wheat I’ve had to date. i’d buy this (along with a few other NG beers all the time if it were available here). Bottle conditioned, with a ton of roasted black malt in the nose and flavor, great body, super complex roasty dry coffee, chocolate, wheat, and rye in the flavor, and the rye gives it a great dry finish as well. One of their better beers."

Probably one of the best dunkelweizens out there. Spicy aroma, cloves and cinnamon mainly. Nutty, spicy, and caramel on the palate. Nice on the palate for an interesting mouthfeel, a bit chewy.

Roasty and chocolaty. Sweet with a little taste of coke on the finish. Nice for the style.

Bottles. I have had this probably 2-3 times. I remember someone gifting me a bottle of this at BCTC one year and then receiving another through a bigger NG-based trade. Definitely one of the best American or German dunkelweizens I have had. Lots of roast, light spice, hearty wheat, light cocoa, and some dark fruits. Flavor is full and tasty, light esters, some banana (but not overpowering at all, thankfully), more spice and roast. Relatively dry for the style. Mama Like!

Black Wheat pours very dark brown, almost black color. Hold it up to the light and you can see little ruby highlights. A huge head is poured. I had to wait a bit before it calmed down to what you see above. It’s tan, fluffy, and full of craters. The smell starts off like a lot of wheat beers do. I picked up a little bit of a fruity aroma. Banana. I also picked up a good amount of spice. As the beer warms up though, the beer changes a bit. I got more of a roasted aroma with some chocolate and coffee thrown in. A welcome surprise.
The taste starts off just like the smell did. It’s a light tasting brew with the fruit and spice. But then the beer hits the middle of your palette and the beer turns to a roasty and smokey taste. The chocolate and coffee then linger a bit. It’s like the beer transforms. The mouthfeel goes more towards light then medium bodied. Slight amount of carbonation.

2.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
I personally was not a fan of this beer although others I was with really liked it, may just not be the style for me. Poured a deep black with a beige head. Nose and taste was spicy and malty. I’m not sure what exactly I would like the beer to have done differently for me, but it just wasn’t for me.

Bottle from Pick N Save. (I cannot believe I have not rated this before) Pours root beer brown including some foamy head. Aroma is faintly sweet chocolate, some fruit, some spiciness, some banana. Taste is more of the same. Interesting blend with the chocolate banana hints mixed with the grain wheat flavor. Some caramel. Earthy. Faint alcohol presence. The days are gone when I thought the "Black" and the "Wheat" were a very strange combination of words. Not as much a summer brew as perhaps a fall one.

Poured from bottle that’s been sitting in my basement all summer, pours a nice dark brown with a tan head, aroma is full of banana with chocolate and spices, the flavor is much of the same, the flavor and aroma works very well together and it finishes smooth, delicious.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a deep, dark chocolate/chestnut brown color with slight golden brown edges and a frothy beige head. Good retention, slowly fading into a thick lasting ring that leaves chunks of lacing behind.
Interesting aroma with characteristics of a wheat beer as well as some sweet, darker malts. Zesty spice notes, especially pepper and clove along with bready yeast, caramel and chocolate malt.
Medium bodied and fuller than expected with a toasted malt presence up front with hints of chocolate, toffee and caramel. There’s also a heavy spice presence with lots of zesty, peppery clove and cinnamon. Bready yeast and pretty heavy for the style. Subtle bitterness and a dry finish.

Reviewed from notes.
Pours a very dark brown with a good light tan head. The nose brings some really nice weizen characteristics of banana and clove along with some light chocolate. The taste is a bit of darker malt, chocolate, and then banana and clove. Really quite tasty. Good feel and carbonation. Drinks quite well.
