The name is a bit deceptive, as I was surprised by how malt forward this was in the aroma. Taste is surprisingly the same with very low bitterness for an IPA. Pretty decent mouthfeel with an average length finish. A very drinkable beer, but there just doesn’t seem to be a lot of going on and it is extremely malt dominant. Really unusual aroma for an IPA named "Hop Hearty" since the malt really shows up here in the aroma. It’s not a bad smell, I get scents of honey nut cheerios, caramel, with just a really subtle hint of citrus hop in the background. Tastes pretty grainy with a lot of caramel, along with an almost toasty quality as well. The hops only show up in the finish, and it’s a very brief bitter finish. Medium mouthfeel, a decent IPA, but it tastes a lot more like a Vienna instead. Metalhead (570), Lake Zurich, Illinois, USA

I had my nose an inch from the head and still almost NO aroma. IMO, this is the "Bud" of IPAs. Goes down quick, clean and non offensive but NOTHING stands out. jfenglish (203), Chicago, Illinois, USA

Bitter, floral aroma, with a good balance of hops on the palate. Smooth. "Balance" keeps coming to mind with this one, nice balance between the assertive hop flavors and the malts. railcat1 (578), Orlando, Florida, USA

Flavors are initially dense, complex bitterness. Very malty and rich. Some residual sweetness. Overall, a great IPA. lovemyipas (420), sw burbs, Illinois, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Feb 29, 2008 pours a cloudy dark copper with a one finger fluffy light tan head. aroma is toasted caramel malt and hops with pine and orange peel. it has a light to medium body with descent lacing and good carbonation. flavor is the same as aroma but a little stronger especially the pine. a little thin on the palate here and there, but the pine sits on the tongue for a while. all in all not bad of a crisp session-able ipa. the best part is from the middle to the aftertatse. as it warms the aroma catches up to the flavor a bit.
