johnadam2002 (529), Hainesport, New Jersey, USA Jun 12, 2007 Pours amber with a reddish tint, with a creamy white head. Aroma of hops and citrus. Taste was a good balance of malt and hops with the hops slightly overpowering the sweet malt. Hints of citrus and pine present. NobleSquirrel (1099), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jun 2, 2007 Pretty decent beer, but much maltier than I’d expect from something titled otherwise. But tasty nonetheless. kenb (1100), Oregon, USA Jun 1, 2007 12 oz bottle via Iowahawkeye (thanks!). Pours a hazy dark amber with a citrusy nose. Taste starts with LOTS of sweet malts, caramel, then some grapefruit, orange, pine, earthy hops, and ends bittersweet, mostly sweet though to the aftertaste. Body is medium/full. Carbonation medium. Pretty tasty. presario (2953), Calgary, Alberta, Canada May 29, 2007 Chicago trip. Sunday 17:56. Bottle in the hotel room. Deep copper. Lasting thick foam head and lacing. Hoppy nose with some malt presence. More malt than hops. British style or American ESB. Hops do build through the bottle. Nice and drinkable. Balanced more to the malt than the hops. Not a west coast IPA. joe1510 (501), Illinois, USA May 26, 2007 12oz Bottle

I get an immediate hop smack in the face as soon as the bottle is cracked open. Hop Hearty poured amber with a slight haze from the bottle conditioning. A 1+ finger dense craggy off white head formed on the pour. There’s very few carbonation bubbles rising to that tightly packed head. Thick drink lines after each sip.
This beer has a solid caramel backbone but the main aspect is the bountiful hop bouquet. Citric hops lead the way in the formof sweetened grapefruit along with a squeeze or two of orange. Pine needles are also a welcome addition. Mild but noticeable alcohol fumes rise through the air adding a nice complexity to things.
That caramel maltiness leads the way along with a mildly toasted malt. Hops quickly take over but are more of a flavor complexity than a bittering component. Piney hops show up first but are soon matched by sweetened grapefruit and orange juice. The pine needle hoppiness shows up again on the backend and leaves a nice moderate bitterness. Nice balance, leaning to the hoppier side but more balanced and flavorful than most.
Medium bodied with a prickly carbonation on the swallow. Lively mouthfeel with enough bitterness to keep you wanting more. Slightly drying on the finish.
I could drink and drink and keep on drinking Hop Hearty. This beer has the ability to make you want another drink immediately after the last.
Hop Hearty is one of my favorite IPAs. If this was available in Illinois it would be constantly stocked in my fridge. A wonderful drink from New Glarus. I’m sure getting it straight from the brewery doesn’t hurt the quality either.
5/12/07 jrob21 (1251), Atlanta, Georgia, USA May 22, 2007 Clear amber color with a decent head. Aromas of plum and raisins. Hops are a little muted. Taste is smooth and slightly sweet. Not sure how old this bottle is but that may explain the muted hop profile. Slight caramel and candi sugar flavors. BustedFlat (552), Edina, Minnesota, USA May 20, 2007 12 once bottle. Shaker glass. Amber with a big tan head. Aroma was of grassy hops and roast malt. Flavor was piney, hoppy with some malt. Some bitter and burnt notes. One of the better IPA’s I’ve tried. Cletus (5001), Connecticut, USA May 18, 2007 Bottle courtesy of Stine. Pours copper/amber and opaque with a thin white head and decent lacing. Smells of oranges, perfume, malt and dough. Tastes of tea, mild citrus and some complimentary bitterness. Mouthfeel is slick with a bitter finish. Average.
