DarkElf (2681), La Jolla, California, USA Jul 7, 2005 (12 oz bottle: Obtained in trade with CaptainCougar, thanks Tom!) Caramely, sweet, malty and hoppy nose is a harbinger of things to come. This is a wonderfully delicious beer, very malty, caramely, and quite sweet, with a lightly toasty and tea-like finish. In comparison to the malty sweetness, the hops is relatively mild, imparting a pleasant, fresh-tasting bitterness in the finish for a balanced flavor and palate. But this is definitely my kind of IPA, even if it isn’t especially typical of the style. Medium/full body, rich and slightly sticky on the palate, but cleaned out a bit in the finish by the hops bitterness. Medium amber color shows some slight ruddy highlights, and is a bit cloudy in appearance. Nearly an inch of light tan head forms after the pour, subsiding to a thin, complete layer after a few minutes, but leaving plentiful swiss cheese lacing on the glass. Excellent across the board. matta (1137), Tampa, Florida, USA Jul 6, 2005 Thanks again to rater WaWood for sending me all these tasty New Glaurs!
The IPA pours a tawny bronze body with a wonderfully full off white head. The aroma is a large mass of caramel, toffee, brown sugar followed by a hops eruption. Definitely dry hopped! The flavor is vivid and jam-packed with sweet malts and citric / pine sap like hops. The big alpha hops blast grapefruit to the senses. The palate is never weak and rather creamy. A lovely IPA indeed!
Hats off to New Glaurs for their brilliant craftsmanship!
MIBRomeo (1962), Wisconsin, USA Jul 5, 2005 Pours a nice copper color lots of bubbles floating up maintaining a strong well laced thick creamy white head. Big citrus hop some pine in the aroma as well very light malt hints of copper smells great, very bright and crisp. Palate is full and creamy, well coated and smooth. Flavor is pretty basic but very good a big citrus hop front w/ a light malt after that and a nice bitter finish. A little floral in it as well and definatelly a touch of pine. Overall a dang good IPA. FoolishMortal (965), San Diego, California, USA Jun 22, 2005 Burnt orange amber color, small white foamy head. Cascade like citrus and piney aromatics. Muted malt flavors, some floral and resinous hop characters. Finish is some residual bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium light, perhaps a little matte. 11026 (1799), Alabama, USA Jun 17, 2005 Bottle from Styles. Pours a deep amber color and very clear. Yellowish tan head erupts into a very foamy layer that fades out slowly and leaves great lacing. Aroma is a resinous blast of C hops. Very piney and citric. Smaller notes of caramel malt can be detected if I work at it. Pleasantly balance with hop bitterness and malt sweetness, sort of a blend of piney caramel. Body is dissapointingly flaccid. Such a nice balance of hop and malt initially and then just a watery nothingness. Overall enjoyable but disappointing in the finish. Pailhead (2572), Allen Park, Michigan, USA Jun 16, 2005 Bottle: Courtesy of Styles. Aroma is a nice blend of piney hops and caramel. Pours a dark transparent amber with a small off-white head. Very nice lacing. Caramel malt up front with a pretty big hop finish. Hops are mostly piney with a touch of citrus. A very nice IPA. Juelze (889), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA Jun 15, 2005 Pours a reddish copper color with thick off-white head. It quickly fades to a 1/8" head and nice amounts of lacing leave there fingerprints on the glass as the beverage is consumed. Smells of Cascade hops with it’s floral and citrusy smell with subtle notes of pine. Taste is less hoppy then what you’d expect but still a delicious IPA. The hops beat up your tongue on the intial swallow and then the caramel malt comes in to finish the job. I swear I detected a faint roasted taste in this beer as well. Excellent IPA. barleyPops (1079), Quad-Cities, Illinois, USA Jun 14, 2005 12 oz. bottle. Wow, this is a good one! the grapefruit & pine aroma from the dry hopping greets you first. appearance in my glass is of a tarnished copper color with an off-white head which disappears rather quickly leaving a thin layer of lace. there is a strong caramel malt backbone which helps to balance out the hop bitterness. mouthfeel is medium to almost full. NG is quickly becoming a new favorite, can’t wait to try the new Unplugged Imperial IPA after tasting this one. Highly recommended!!!
