daknole (2810), Plantation, Florida, USA Sep 12, 2009 Finally I get to try this! Thanks inkubus27. Pours a brown pour, light brown head. aroma has a lot of coffee and chocolate with some interesting plum notes. Flavor has good coffee, roasted malt and some light chocolate covered raisins. Good. sleestak (180), Williamston, Michigan, USA May 19, 2009 A bottle. Poured a reddish black with a decently sized tan head. Crazy aroma of roasted malt, nuts, and cocoa. Flavor is much less sweet than expected. Instead, it was bitter chocolate, dark chocolate with a light background sourness. A lot of carbonation shifts it a little toward porter style. Still enjoyable and recommended. yobdoog (1429), Woodridge NY, New York, USA Apr 22, 2009 Nice. Rich dark black clor with a small foamy off white head. Aroma has a ton of creamy coffee. Taste has a light hop and coffee grind bitterness. Mostly smooth and almost milk creaminess. ThaBobfather (178), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Mar 19, 2009 Much malty goodness here. As complex as it is smooth. It pours black reddish beautiful. Deep color. Nice head. Only interaction with a sweet stout. It’s good. lithy (1600), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Mar 16, 2009 Bottle thanks to Skyview. Light brown-red with a thin quick off white head. Aroma is bitter coffee, some autolysis, soy sauce, and choclate. Taste is mostly bitter chocolate bark and roasted malt, coffee finish. kyzr (1119), Belgrade, Montana, USA Feb 8, 2009 Bottle thanks to Skyview. Pours dark brown with smaller tan head. Nice nose of roasted malt with some hints of chocolate. Flavor is almost like a chocolate coke. Very sweet with decent roast. Creamy mouthfeel that rounds out a coffee like finish. pantanap (1323), Chicago, Illinois, USA Dec 31, 2008 12oz bottle from woodmans, kenosha..... very dark brown pour with creamy light beige head that quickly disappears..... aroma of grains, chocolate, and roasted malt... flavors consist of sweet ashy chocolate and roasted malt. much too carbonated for my liking that detracts from its enjoyabllity. to its benefit, a nice creamy mouthfeel was welcoming. FlacoAlto (2473), Tucson, Arizona, USA Nov 18, 2008 A solid pour produces a three finger thick, lightly browned, fairly dense, tan colored head. The beer is a very dark brown, really almost black color that shows a brilliantly clear, rich ruby hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells up front of chocolated, but is quickly dominated by toasted grain notes, some burnt raisin aromas, burnt grain notes as well as notes of charred whole grain bread crust.
This is nice and roast focused without being too harsh. Up front this has a lightness to it that quickly gets a touch viscous as the beer slides across the tongue; the light-medium body helps to balance the dominant roast character. This does finish with a big roast character that produces a dry, bitter finish that lingers on the palate. A touch of dark cocoa is noticeable up front just before the roast character fully kicks in. The beer is then dominated by blackly toasted bread / grain notes, lightly sharp black coffee flavors and a touch of burnt-induced acidity. A touch of malty sweetness becomes a bit more noticeable as the beer warms, but this still finishes quite dry.
This is a nice example of a roast forward stout. I like that it remains balanced / in check and the roast character does not get overly astringent or acidic. I would be quite happy reaching for this when I wanted a session stout.
