Aroma of malt, both dry and sweet, slight sour note as well. No sourness in the flavor though, thankfully. A bit drier and less sweet than I had expected from the style -- a bit like a Vienna lager but fundamentally on target. Perfect hop balance -- that is, light application thereof as the style dictates. Not quite as flavorful as other examples of the style. I’ve had better, both of the style and from New Glarus. I probably won’t make it a point to get a sixer of next year’s batch, but if I run across it I’ll grab some. drywallman (228), Lake in the Hills, Illinois, USA

The appearance I could gather was amber/slight brown. It’s aroma and initial taste were of the sweet malt, and a well balanced toastiness. Hops were at the right level for a Marzen. A very good beer. | 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Sep 19, 2005 bottle-pours deep amber with a small white head. not all that aromatic. toasted grains with a light notes of rainwater and carmel. the appearance just sux and the body suffers as well-thin and watery. the flavors are probably the most true to style for the 3 marzens i had on this day. long toasted grain finish. i will try it again once i get the chance. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 18, 2005 Aroma is semi-sweet fruit, mostly cherry and apricot, with bready malt overtones. Expansive malt body hints at toffee and caramel with an underbody of slight yeast fruitiness. Creamy mouthfeel, hinges on buttery, but never syrupy. The almost nutty finish is not at all cloying, instead finishing clean and leaving me wanting more. What a great session brew! MAP (1089), Lakewood, Ohio, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Sep 9, 2005 Very attractive dark copper-reddish color. Aroma is sweet malt, cherries, grass and sugar. The flavor comes off as a hearty ’fest beer that is rich and sweet all at the same time. Body is crisp and has a decent hop flavor towards the end where the cherry flavor comes in, a hint of oak is there as well. This is a really enjoyable example of the style. juliejalapeno (16), USA

Beautiful rich coppery red, nice head, great mouth feel, perfect carbonation, the sweetness and dryness that interplay and make it a definition session beer. Doesn’t get any better! Just put on draft at the Bodega downtown La Crosse. Juelze (895), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA
