UPDATED: MAY 19, 2012 Bottle in KC, courtesy of foppa78 (re-rated bottle courtesy of arminjewell). Reddish brown appearance with a brown head. Rich cherry syrup, slightly nutty, light toffee, chocolate aroma. Fairly tart, sweet cherry pie filling, toasty, light chocolate malty, slight toffee flavor with a toasty, moderately tart cherry aftertaste. Update: 2012 version. Quite medicinal, childís cough syrup, cherry aroma with a fair amount of oak. Tingly, super rich, tangy, syrupy cherry flavor that is somewhat medicinal. Way stronger on the negative side than I remember the last version being.

Bottle from guyinchicago. What a unique beer. Pours a reddish brown color with a very small head. Cherry candy on the nose with light hints of caramel and chocolate. Flavor is sweet chocolate covered cherries, with more cherry flavor than chocolate. Slight tartness creeps in. Very cool beer.

UPDATED: DEC 27, 2011 Bottle... DLD06... Dark, clear, caramel-colored ale with a small, creamy, well-tanned head. The nose is of chocolate and black cherries. When I take a sip, Iím confused... is this a stout brewed with cherries or is it a chocolately, dark, fruit beer? Light cocoa and big cherries in the flavor. Tart, but way too sweet at the same time. Medium to full-bodied and ultra silky with fizzy carbonation. Finishes sweet and tart. Odd bird, this one. But not bad at all... just dissonant and not really my thing.

12oz bottle acquired in trade with The_Enemy (as part of his surprise, unsolicited box of beers!) - thanks! Pours a deep ruby red color with a smaller sized off white head. Where to start on the aromas! Aromas of oak, vanilla, light cherries, light chocolate, some smoke, and whisky. Nice and complex with something new every sniff I took. Everything blended and worked perfectly. Tastes of strong cherries with light oak, vanilla and chocolate. Sweet and tart. In my book, New Glarus is definitely on top when comes to fruit beers.

UPDATED: JUL 12, 2012 More cherry than stout, and good deal of sourness in finish. Reddish tinge to black stout, pinkish foam. Good amount of lace. Well carbonated and a tongue numbing, very drinkable as long as you like the sourness. Barrel woodiness mid sip satisfying cherry aftertaste. Thanks Flyingbison. Upgraded it with a two-year aged version consumed 5 years later.

Deep brown pour. The nose is loaded with bright cherry aroma. Nice mix of spicy pits as well as sweeter flesh. There is a faint touch of cocoa to suggest that itís a stout, but if I was blindfolded - Iím not sure I would have picked it out. Stlll - despite the sweetness and fruitiness it is a very well-made brew. Itís like an un-tart Belgian Red.

355mL courtesy of CaptainCougar. Pours a clear deep amber with a thin, yet persistent off-white head. Excellent spotty to near sheety lace. Not quite a stout body so I agree with the Fruit Beer category. Aroma at first is cherry Sucrets, coughdrops, Chloroseptic lozenges. As it warms, the powerful black cherries emerge without off character- robust, sweet. Like Dr. Browns Black Cherry Soda. Taste and body is beautiful- soft, tart finish, quick lactic sour that is zippy and quick on the palate. Full, creamy, buttery, meaty body almost like the NG Old English Porter. Really beautiful all around.

UPDATED: AUG 19, 2012 12 ounce bottle courtesy of MrPickles. Thanks! Opened 6/7/10. Pours a orange-brown color with a thin head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of candied cherries, a milky note and some brown malts. The taste is dominated by cherries, both fresh and candied, with a lightly roasty note and some nutty notes. Medium bodied and smooth. Cherry stouts are a style that do not agree with me at all, and this like all the others has a medicinal quality. That said, this is very good and if I liked the combination of roasted malts and cherries, I would love this one. 7/3/8/4/14

Had a bottle at CaptainCougarís, shared by Captain Cougar. Pours a hazy dark brown color with a thin tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of tart cherries, molasses, roasted malts and honey. The taste is tart cherries, faint roasted malts, honey. Medium bodied. Very, very nice. 9/3/8/4/18

Bottle shared at Bruceís pad, soured via an IP in íMerica, 19/09/13. Dark mahogony brown with a thin tan head. Nose is cherry forward, light chocolate notes, fruit cake, cocoa poweder. Taste comprises sweet notes, lgiht cocoa, earthy notes, mineral tones, cherry and chocolate brownies. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, dry finish. Decent enough if a little over sweet. Wouldnít have this as a fruit beer !!! Stout all over !
