This is Dan’s Gold Medal winning "Unplugged Cherry Stout." This ale is aged in Oak barrels to promote the spontaneous fermentation. Eight Wisconsin malted barleys combined with Wisconsin Montmorency Cherries make for a complex and sublime taste experience that you may never find again.

UPDATED: MAR 8, 2007 Dan has done it again. This is one amazing fruit beer. A strong taste of cherries and a great aroma and appearance. It goes down smooth and has a wonderful aftertaste. The oak taste only adds to this wonderful beer. I will be sad to see this beer become retired. (I only wish dan could keep this one as one of the year rounders!)

A great tasting Cherry Stout. Smooth Cherry taste hard to tell its a beer. New Glarus does an amazing job with their fruit beers

Poured a short, fizzy head which dissipated rapidly. Was deep brown in color with expected red hue. For my taste, cherry taste overwhelmed. Not a fan.

The aroma explodes with maraschino cherries and some chocolate on the back end. It’s a beautiful looking beer with a thick head and really dark red hue. The taste starts with sweet, sugary, maraschino cherry and ends with a darker chocolate/caramel finish. I like this beer a lot, but it’s very sweet.

This is a delicious beer. Black redish body with a tan redish head. Aroma is cherries, chocolate, coffee, maple syrup. Taste is something like Godiva truffle, chocolate with a omnipresent fresh cherries. The sweetness is well balanced and not overwhelming.. Dan Carey, your are right.. this is art.

Just when you thought New Glarus had done it all with fruit here comes the Unpugged Cherry Stout. In my opinion there is no other brewery that uses fruit as well in any style of beer. Nice dark red color with a light aroma of bing cherries as well as vanilla. The body is a little thin but the flavors of oak and chocolate take over making it a nice change of pace for a stout. The more I drink the more complex the beer gets. Get this while you can as it will be gone soon and may never be back.

Not much head on this one, but when it was there it had a dark red hue. Bubbly head almost spritzer like. Now I wouldn’t say this is a stout, it sure is tasty. A wonderful cherry taste that is nicely balanced with the chocolate malt. It doesn’t have much body but it is one of the better beers that I have had lately. Found this in a little local bar in New Glarus called Sportsman’s Bar & Grill. This place had the only Unplugged series in town. Great place to get a good cheap meal.

UPDATED: JUL 2, 2006 Drank this at a recent tasting with Perkeo and chriso420 and it was easily my favorite with the Eisphyre coming in a close second. I must admit I’m a sucker for brett beers, and this is no exception. I did wonder what exactly qualified this as a stout considering the color and body, but no matter. Sour cherries, brett funk, oak, a slight stale quality that reminded me of an old paperback, and a noticeable medicinal taste. Confounding and wonderful at the same time!

I expected a stout with a little sting of cherry in it. Something dark, mysterious, and big. This was thin and overpowered by the cherries. It’s drinkable, but seems more of a sour brown ale than anything else. A rare miss by Dan.

Very dark brown with a hint o’ red. Dominated by tart cherry flavor and scent. Probably a bit unbalanced/ lacking in beer characteristics. Quite good, though, and better than many fruit "beers."
